The information of the Reverend William Metcalfe of the parish of the Holy Trinity in Ely in the said Isle taken on oath before us two of His Majesty’s Justice of the Peace in and for the said Isle this 30th day of May One thousand eight hundred and sixteen.

Who on his said oath saith that on Thursday morning the twenty third day of May instant several persons from the parishes of Littleport Downham and Ely in the said Isle riotously assembled in the town of Ely – that the said rioters between the hours of eight and nine o’clock went to the house of William Cooper of the parish of saint Mary in Ely aforesaid shopkeeper and proceeded to break the window of the said house and demanded money of the said William Cooper and threatened to distroy his house if he refused and this informant further states that the prisoner Aaron Layton was amongst the said rioters and that the said William Cooper paid to this informant ten pounds with directions to pay the same to the said rioters and that he this informant paid the sum of five pounds to same person on behalf of the Littleport rioters and that a person of the name of William Atkin demanded five pounds for the Ely people and that the prisoner Aaron Layton then said “I am an Ely man and a tenant of Mr Coopers” whereupon he this informant immediately paid to the said Aaron Layton the remaining sum of five pounds.

The information of William Watts of the parish of the Holy Trinity in Ely in the said Isle gentlemen taken on oath before us two of his Majesty’s Justices of the peace in and for the said Isle this 31st day of May one thousand eight hundred and fifteen.

Who on his said oath faith that on Thursday morning the twenty third day of May instant several rioters from the towns of Littleport and Ely assembled at the dwelling house of William Cooper of the parish of Saint Mary in Ely aforesaid shopkeeper and demanded money – that the said William Cooper paid to the Reverend William Metcalfe the sum of ten pounds one moiety of which he immediately paid to some person on behalf of the Littleport Rioters – that some one in the crowd then said “The Ely people have as much right to five pounds as the Littleport people” that he then heard the prisoner Aaron Layton say “I’ll take the five pounds I am Mr Coopers tenant”
