Subtopic 1: / Effective Supervisory Skills Building and The Job of Supervisor
Time Allotted: / 4 hours
Description: / Participants are introduced to course materials, logistics, and learning objectives. A self-assessment of supervisory skills is provided. Also, this lesson focuses on the major roles, responsibilities and duties of supervisors; stresses the implications of changing values and attitudes for supervision; promotes a better understanding of personal attitudes and beliefs about work and how these affect supervisory styles and behaviors.
Subtopic 2: / Understanding Behavior Styles
Time Allotted: / 4 hours
Description: / Prior to this session participants take a DISC behavioral assessment. During the session they will learn about their behavioral style and the styles of others. They will understand how to better interact and communicate with members of their work teams. Additionally, they will understand what strengths each worker brings to the team. Understanding behavioral styles helps supervisors release higher levels of motivation from members of the work team.
Subtopic 3: / Leading the Work Team
Time Allotted: / 4 hours
Description: / Participants will view the video, “12 O’clock High.” This contrasts two leaders with opposite styles. Post case study discussion will include a leadership style analysis for each leader as well as, situational leadership assessment.
Subtopic 4: / Developing Administrative Skills – Planning, Organizing and Budgeting

Description: / This module provides an overview of the key elements of planning, including setting goals and objectives, establishing work plans and schedules, managing one’s time, and delegating effectively; the budget process and your role in it.
Subtopic 5: / Managing Personnel Issues – Selection, Orientation, Training & Evaluation
Time Allotted: / 4 hours
Description: / This module addresses skills involved in the selection, orientation, training and evaluation of employees; emphasizes the relationship between these processes and performance; offers a problem-solving approach to professional development and performance evaluation.
Subtopic 6: / Training and Evaluations
Time Allotted: / 4 hours
Description: / This module addresses skills involved in training employees using adult learning theory and training is tied to performance evaluations. Instruction on writing evaluations, holding the evaluation conversation and includes future expectations.
Subtopic 7: / Communication, Coaching, Counseling, and Change
Time Allotted: / 4 hours
Description: / Discusses communication channels of organizations; emphasizes the difference between communication and effective communication; reinforces effective communication skills, including coaching, counseling, directing, giving feedback, and listening. Participants will also learn effective change management tools and techniques.
Subtopic 8: / Creating a Climate for Motivation
Time Allotted: / 4 hours
Description: / Introduces theories and concepts of motivation and their implications for supervisors; highlights the link between a supervisor’s attitudes and an employee’s level of motivation; offers strategies and techniques for enhancing motivation.
Subtopic 9: / Maintaining a Productive Work Environment/Conflict Resolution
Time Allotted: / 4 hours
Description: / Examines factors that contribute to performance problems and grievances; emphasizes the importance of encouraging self-discipline; offers a problem-solving approach to addressing performance problems and taking disciplinary measures. Participants will also receive a conflict resolution model.
Subtopic 10: / Fostering Public Relations/Providing Quality Service/Summary of Lessons
Time Allotted: / 4 hours
Description: / Emphasizes the supervisor’s role in providing customers with quality customer service. Also, key issues will be reviewed from lessons 1 - 10; participants will be encouraged to evaluate progress toward course goals, to reassess supervisory skills, and to develop an action plan to continue building skills.

Instructional Methods: Instructor-led classroom training, in-person and in-groups, with opportunities to practice learned skills with scenarios from trainees’ day-to-day jobs. A more in-depth syllabus will be

available to students prior to the beginning of a course.
