General Academy Updates

  1. Staffing updates
  • Southern Assistant position open, interviews in progress. Hope to hire in March
  • Budget talks with State & CWDA, results to come in May
  • Requesting additional funding for next year and beyond
  • Funds for Katie A and CORE 3.0
  • Support for 3.0 will require a new FTE coaching position.
  • CWDA agreed to match
  • San Mateo advocating to secure more funding.
  • Prep for Sups and Coaches – Coaching Institute for Sups. Intro duce different styles of coaching, experiential training. Current plan for pilot – work with counties to choose Sups already doing some coaching. Karri, Stefanie Nieto and Barry Knight working on the curriculum. Skills but also professional development and leadership. ES coming soon. Small group 24-25.

  2. Simultaneous CORE: SF/SM, Santa Clara, Northern Phase II, Southern

Hot Topics/Discussion

  1. CORE 3.0 update
  • Curriculum development plan – content development
  • 20 online modules 24 in class 20 field
  • 26.5 online hours and 18 class hours
  • Phase I – CalSWEC takes block of proposed content SDM, CMI100-200 levels
  • Development will be followed by pilot, feedback and then implementation of Phase I
  • Phase II – assessment block, transition, monitoring blocks to be split up by RTA’s
  • Phase II work started – 3 years of development with 2016 vetting and 2016-2017 pilot to be followed by implementation.
  • CalSWEC requestingthat RTA’s use trainer forms – will collect their feedback on content and revision
  • Just starting to use online learning
  • Counties that can and can’t access online (firewalls?) ?
  • 4E program wants to integrate more with CORE, feb 20th meeting @ CDSS – attendees IVE coordinators, RTA training bureau, Elizabeth Newby (county suggestion to involve workers who have gone through training)

  • 2017 slated for CWS/CMS major revamp – will need to be integrated with new CORE
  • Alameda sees challenges for induction training with new online modules, time and engagement – goal is for 3.0 to be flexible enough that different county needs can be met.
  1. Katie A Learning Collaboratives
  • BAA held a Regional Learning Collaborative on November 18 with Solano, CCC, SF and SC: full audience MH and CW with equal representation. Discussed engagement youth family, out of state placements, fiscal & resources.
  • Will focus on one topic per quarter.
  • February focus will be engagement. Zellerbach video on youth experience, some youth will be there to talk.
  • County question regarding opening up the collaborative to be posed.
  • Katie A tab in BAA website in resources
  • Forum started – successful test but still no responses, hope to see utilization.
  • Statewide trainings Bay Area dates in April teaming and engagement BAA sending trainers to the trainings and then they will train it for BAA.
  • Recent facilitation training on SOP to be adjusted to include Katie A.
  • T4T scheduled June 10-11 on Trauma Informed Systems (w/Chadwick Center).
  • Target audience for Trauma Informed Systems T4T: participants who will go on to train on the topic.
  • Training to go online from Southern Academy –
  • 1st module- What is Behavioral Health?
  • 2ndmodule - What is Child Welfare?
  • Then bring them together
  • Counties have voiced struggle between different lenses of BH and CW.
  • San Mateo brought in a trainer to mediate and help bring two groups together.
  • San Mateo is working with state to get language to help communicate with MH about contributing funding for Katie A efforts. So far MH hasn’t put forth funding. State did bump statewide MH funding for Katie A.
  • TS on most Katie A teams will bring back requested themes.
  • Concurrent Planning Series pilot in North 4.5 month series: 3 online modules and 2 classroom trainings.
  • Online modules on the Canvas platform - 1st module takes 20 minutes to complete.
  • E-learning will be asynchronous- participants log-in and complete on their own rather.
  1. Coaching Institute
  • The two day meeting in July reviewed the elements of what the CORE practice model might be

  • Feedback – directors brought up need to look at structure of TAB
  • What works?
  • Getting info on what’s coming up – implementation, knowledge sharing (example- 1st place Katie A was a name not an acronym)
  • Highlighting a county rather than lengthy county sharing every time
  • Establishing links with other counties,
  • Social aspect, opportunity to check in with other counties
  • Saves hours of work through hearing from others at TAB
  • Hearing how other counties structure certain positions
  • What is challenging?
  • County sharing too long, too detailed,
  • Intent behind county sharing: sharing promising things that other counties might want to replicate, and hiring.
  • Maybe more structure of county sharing would help – topic specific sharing? Shared learning?
  • Topic highlighting could be the way to focus the county sharing
  • Suggestion to make the topics focused on training and training innovation.
  • Suggestion to spend less time on welcomes and BAA updates.
  • Be mindful of time when sharing.

  • 3 new people
  • Desperately need CORE
  • SSA - service aid has had individual training
  • Working with workers on their writing skills – hired a writing coach to work with SSA and MSW
  • Family Team Meetings –
  • A lot of individual and coaching training

  • Hiring ER workers
  • Working with local law enforcement
  • SOP – w
  • Secondary trauma group – well received by attendees, trying to get more to go
  • Coaching facilitators

c)Cal State East Bay

  • building capacity students aware internship slots less than participants, 62 students currently

d)San Mateo

  • New agency director.
  • Hired 15-20 workers last FY.
  • 3 new supervisors, 11 workers, 1 training supervisor coming back this FY.
  • 5 promotions
  • Total of 19 new hires
  • Federal probation review directives to implement. Will need training around emergency response.
  • AB74 (family stabilization) – paradigm shift. Any who receive benefits but attempting to work meet TAMF can’t because of MH, domestic violence or drug abuse issues – develop a carrier track within Eligibility – get SW training.
  • Funding to come for AB74 – San Mateo to promote training to address this.
  • CWDA will help counties with Federal probation directives.

e)Santa Cruz

  • SOP series continuing.
  • SOP incorporation.

f)Santa Clara

  • 17 new social workers to start on Monday.
  • Still need to hire about 12 more social workers.
  • 5 definitely need Foundations.
  • About 6 for Manager CORE.
  • November will have the last cohort of CAPP finishing up.
  • Dually involved youth collaboration with probation.
  • Working on doing more partnering with schools.

g)Sonoma

  • Hired one new worker with 5 more to come.
  • ICWA refresher to come.
  • Manager Sups Off-Sites coming.
  • SOP overview in March with mangers.
  • Finishing up SIP.

h)Contra Costa

  • New manager in SD.
  • SOP implementation lessons- started group coaching and it’s been hard to transition to individual.
  • Manager SOP group:
  • ½ meeting discuss implementation issues ½ meeting mapping cases.
  • 3 managers present a case – facilitator then helps group work through it.
  • Hope to bring the process in front of staff.

i)Alameda

  • Hiring – waiting until June after graduates.
  • William and Najeeb went to a T4T in Seattle - PRT permanency round tables coming soon.
  • Grant through NCCD (crime and delinquency).
  • Amy working on SOGI (gender identity) – going into units then taking it to bigger trainings.
  • Folks moved around in units – managers to do coaching and skills.

j)Solano

  • Just had trainings with Dr. DeGruy, which were wonderful.
  • Finishing up 2 SOP cohorts along with six additional months of coaching.

k)San Benito

  • New director – lots of changes
  • Will hire 1 full time SD person.
  • Hired 1 new supervisor.
  • In the process of hiring 3 workers
  • Implementing SOP with help of BAA.

l)Santa Clara

  • CORE – new worker training beginning.
  • ER & DI departments are splitting.
  • Finished CAPP and continuing units (half way point).
  • Will begin to integrate CAPP in the front end in early February.
  • Hiring 2 CW & 2 Probation workers to work in ajoint unit.
  • SIP key issues – disproportionality.
  • CAPP comes with coaching – all Sups and managers gone through

m) San Francisco

  • Hiring 11 new workers that will need CORE.
  • Focus groups for Peer Review in February
  • SOP 2-years in – lesson learned:
  • half of staff are trained
  • 4 & 5 cohorts to start.
  • Without coaching there are struggles.
  • Staff are surpassing the Sups in SOP skills/use – Sups need
  • Need more coaches – coaching and attendance at modules will be mandatory in future cohorts

n)Marin

  • 2nd stage of SOP training.
  • 3rd SOP cohort has begun,
  • Coaching supervisors,
  • Trying to keep energy for SOP going
  • SIP approved.
  • Refresher basics on SDM trainings.
  • Safe measures – coaching supervisors.
  • 1st community partners meeting coming up,
  • Need training for teaming
  • Hired 2 new workers and a new manager formerly of Solano.

2)Additional Information

  • Statewide Convening: July 22 @ Davis campus
  • Each county to be represented, roughly 50 slots.
  • County feedback will be requested.
  • Will have breakout groups to discuss topics – implemetaion,
  • 46 counties statewide are doing SOP
