What does it mean to be a Knight? The official definition is “A man holding a nonhereditary title conferred by a sovereign in recognition of personalmerit or service to the country.” Service – it was a part of being a knight in medieval times, and it is part of being a John Champe Knight now.

John Champe High School is partnering with Volunteer Loudoun to create an environment of “giving back”. Students are encouraged to volunteer to enrich the lives of others and make a difference in the community. As Knights, we CHARGE you to uphold the idea of service to others.

Levels of Service:

CHAMPEion / 25 hours/year / Your service to the Champe community will be recognized at graduation with silver service cords to wear with pride!
Class of 2014 – 50 hours (25 hours submitted annually)
Class of 2015 – 75 hours (25 hours submitted annually)
Class of 2016 – 100 hours (25 hours submitted annually)
Class of 2017 – 100 hours (25 hours submitted annually)
Students will receive a Certificate of Appreciation from Volunteer Loudoun for any hours performed
Bronze level President’s Volunteer Service Award / 100-174 hours / The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, created by President George W. Bush, established The President’s Volunteer Service Award to encourage individuals, families and groups to demonstrate a sustained commitment to their community. Volunteer Loudoun offers this award to encourage and strengthen volunteerism in Loudoun County. Students in grades 9-12 (who qualify based on total annual hours) will receive a personalized certificate signed by the President of the United States and the designated lapel pin.
Students will also be recognized as a CHAMPEion at John Champe High School graduation with silver service cords.

Tracking & Recording Volunteer Hours:

  3. Then select Become a Member. Fill out the age-specific “Release and Liability Agreement” and read the brief orientation information.
  4. In the top right hand corner of the screen, select the green login button. If you are not a member, you must first register.

  1. Complete the online form. Under the Sign-up/Registration menu add all required information in the first three panels (Basic, Contact, and Login). At the bottom of the Contact Info. panel enter the name of your high school for your Place of Employment. If the school name is missing, a certificate will not be printed. You are strongly encouraged to complete the remainder of the profile to help you find the best volunteer opportunity. Select Submit at the bottom of the page.
  2. If you are already a member, you can add/edit your school name by logging into your HandsOn Connect account. Under Overview/Personal Information, scroll down to the Demographic and Volunteer panel and click on the plus sign. Then enter your school name for your Place of Employment. Check back later and click on Employment Status in the same panel to see if we have modified its pick-list values to let you select your grade. Please enter your current school grade. Select the green Update button at the bottom of the page.
  3. Under My Account, select Self Report your Volunteer Service to input hours for each day you volunteer. Hours will be randomly verified with the organization and all self-reported hours will be validated by a Volunteer Loudoun Systems Administrator as well as a JCHS faculty member. Any false reporting will automatically disqualify a student from participating in the program.
  4. Type of service: Record hours for volunteering when you do something good for an individual/group, an entity (e.g., the environment), or an organization, without expecting anything in return.
  5. Eligibility period for volunteer time electronically submitted for 2013-2014 school year is through midnight on April 30, 2014. (eligibility year is May 1 – April 30 each year)
  6. If you need to correct or update your volunteer hours, you will need to send an email to to request the volunteer hour adjustment. Include your name, school, date of service and the correct volunteer hours.
  7. Under My Account, the Overview option provides a snapshot of your volunteer activity and a detailed listing of your volunteer history.
  8. Certificates are sent to the high school Guidance Office at the end of the school year and will be distributed through the Guidance Office or the school awards’ ceremony.
  9. Hours need to be printed and submitted to the JCHS Office of School Counseling annually. These forms should be submitted no later than June 1.
