Course Description: This course reviews basic concepts of toxicology as they relate to environmental toxicants. After toxicant exposure, the distribution, transformation, elimination of toxicants is discussed. The application of basic toxicology concepts is applied to select toxic agents and in select fields of study

Course Learning Goals/Objectives: The principal goal of this course is to familiarize the students with the basic concepts in toxicology. On completion of the course it is anticipated that the students will be able to discuss the toxicological implications of exposures to environmental/occupational toxicants. The students should have a basic understanding of the pathophysiology changes that occur in response to toxicant exposure. The ways in which compounds are tested for their toxic properties should be understood, and how the toxic properties of classes of toxicants are used in the environmental risk assessment process.

Attendance and Drop Policy: Attendance is mandatory and promptness is expected. The instructor reserves the right to deny entrance into the class if students are late. The instructor also reserves the right to remove any student that disrupts the learning process. Attendance will be periodically monitored. All university policies governing course withdrawal will be applied. Withdrawal will be permitted for students making progress in the course who encounter unexpected difficulties.

Dropping a Course: Students should be advised to see their major department advisor (undergraduate or graduate) for a drop slip which will be signed by the instructor.

Students Dropped for Nonpayment of Tuition or Fees: A student administratively dropped from the course for nonpayment of tuition or fees cannot attend class until after all outstanding bills for tuition and fees have been paid.

Specific Course Requirements: None

Examinations:Due to the class size, a series of multiple choice examinations will be administered throughout the course. Results will be graded on a curve and each student’s lowest test score will be dropped from the final grade.

Grade Calculation: The scores from each exam will be combined and a letter grade will be assigned where A > 90%, B > 80%, C > 70%, D > 60%, F < 60%.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): If you are a student who requires accommodations in compliance with the ADA, please consult with me at the beginning of the semester. As a faculty member, I am required by law to provide “reasonable accommodation” to students with disabilities, so as not to discriminate on the basis of that disability. Your responsibility is to inform me of the disability at the beginning of the semester and provide me with documentation authorizing the specific accommodation. Student services at UTA include the Office for Students with Disabilities (located in the lower level of the University Center) which is responsible for verifying and implementing accommodations to ensure equal opportunity in all programs and activities.

Student Support Services: The University supports a variety of student success programs to help you connect with the University and achieve academic success. They include learning assistance, developmental education, advising and mentoring, admission and transition, and federally funded programs. Students requiring assistance academically, personally, or socially should contact the Office of Student Success Programs at 817-272-6107 for more information and appropriate referrals.

Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is a completely unacceptable mode of conduct and will not be tolerated in any form at The University of Texas at Arlington. All persons involved in academic dishonesty will be disciplined in accordance with University regulations and procedures. Discipline may include suspension or expulsion from the University.

“Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts.” (Regents’ Rules and Regulations, Part One, Chapter VI, Section 3, Subsection 3.2., Subdivision 3.22).

Bomb Threats: If anyone is tempted to call in a bomb threat, be aware that UTA will attempt to trace the phone call and prosecute all responsible parties. Every effort will be made to avoid cancellation of presentations/tests caused by bomb threats. Unannounced alternate sites will be available for these classes. Your instructor will make you aware of alternate class sites in the event that your classroom is not available.

MavMail

The University of Texas at Arlington has adopted MavMail (e-mail) as an official means of communication with students. Students are required to check MavMail regularly.
