(There was no meeting in May due to lack of a quorum.)
Submitted by Jane Califf
Attendance: Gerald (Jerry) McIntyre, Mark Stulbaum, Claire Anderson, Nicholas (Nick) Joanow, Jane Califf
Absent: Trish Comstock, Mary Shaughnessey
A. Minutes of last meeting accepted.
B. Recycling in Bloomfield Schools: Staff members at some schools think that recycling is not operating at its fullest. Jerry will visit all custodians during the summer to discuss how to improve recycling in each school.
C. Municipal Recycling Containers: Not all of them have ads. Jerry will create an ad to put on some of the containers that advertise Bloomfield recycling, particularly the 230 Grove St. Recycling Center open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
D. Recycling Website: Jerry will try to find a student at Bloomfield College who is IT savvy to be an intern to help with updating our website.
E. Earth Day at Shoprite, held April 24th from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the parking lot. Evaluation: The focus was on electronic recycling and the amount collected during this time was equal to what was collected on the same day at the Grove St. Recycling Depot.
We will continue electronic recycling 3 times a year: Fall 2010: Sept. 25th; the New Year after the holidays: Jan. 8, 2011; Spring: May 21, 2011. We may set up at Shoprite if possible.
Jerry will contact Mary to decide when is the best time to send out a press release on this. The Bloomfield Buzz can advertise the dates.
Our Committee is grateful to Greener Bloomfield and the Open Space Committee for tabling with us.
F. Shoprite Cloth Bags: Shoprite gave us 100 cloth bags to distribute on April 24th. We still have a lot left, and at our next meeting we will be filling these bags with flyers on recycling and solutions to storm water pollution. Jane will contact John Palomaki of Greener Bloomfield to see if he has extra copies of their flyers on grasscycling, i.e., cut it and leave it on the lawn; on the no-vehicle-idling law; and on water conservation. If so, we can include them as well.
G. WBMA-TV: We will continue to explore creating TV spots on our local station
to educate people on issues related to recycling and the environment.
The next meeting will be on Wed., July 14th, 7 p.m. in the Mayor’s Conference Room on the second floor of the Law Enforcement Bldg. on Montgomery St.
