Report of Parks and Recreation Committee discussion

The Committee agreed to move sub-committee reports to the top of the agenda.

The Committee approved the May 31, 2011 minutes

Marvin Demers spoke about the Older Adult sub-committee report. He stated there were recommendations at the end of the report. Some were far reaching but they felt there was value to them. He stated they also tried to contact everyone that was involved in senior activities in Dare County and they thought all the municipalities should have more oversight as to senior activities offered.

Elizabeth Demers stated that seniors seemed to be satisfied with the events that the Baum center and the Dare County Center provided.

Katie Burgess stated the Dare Center just hired an older adult coordinator

David Elder gave an update on the youth sub-committee. He received information from Annie Newbern from NCWISE regarding the age ranges of students in Nags Head.

Angela Welsh discussed the youth survey results. Most of the respondents stated playgrounds, green open spaces and music festivals were needed.

Cate Kozak gave an update on the community interaction sub-committee. She stated she talked to people at the carnival and they said there is no “town center”, no place to gather. The consensus was the town needs festivals, dance events and beer and wine festivals. She also stated the town needs to purchase land now while it is inexpensive .

Brendan strum gave an update on the facilities sub-committee. He stated the overall consensus was the town needed to let better inform people of where the various facilities we do have are. A few of the recommendations that came out of the committee were better kayak access and build a park in the empty area at Satterfield Park.

Elizabeth Teague stated Staff would need to time to write the plan and suggested the committee meet at the end of August instead of meeting again in July. She stated she hoped Staff would have the plan for the committees review at that time.

The Committee decided to meet again on Tuesday August 23, 2011 at 3:00 pm in the Conference room at Town Hall. The meeting was adjourned at 5:05 p.m.
