JOB SUMMARY

Leadership role in the development, implementation and coordination of efforts of Touro Law Center in the training, education and research in land use and related issues.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

- Work with a wide array of government, non-profit legal, private law firms and professional planning partners to provide students with the education and experience to advance the practice of land use and planning. Develop and maintain ongoing relationships government agencies, non-profit legal and professional planning partners.

- Identify internship and externship opportunities for students to obtain land use and planning experience.

- Design, develop and implement training and conferences for regulators and attorneys on issues affecting land use and sustainable development at the local and regional level.

- Work with government agencies to provide externship opportunities for students to assist in the preparation of legislation affecting critical land issues.

- Work with the faculty and the curriculum committee to develop course offerings relevant to issues involving land use and sustainable development.

- Supervise the selection and activities of student research fellows.

- Develop databank of information on local codes and ordinances, court decisions of regional significance, new state and local regulations, etc.

- Work with an Advisory Board and a committee of faculty affiliates to develop a strategic plan for the Institute.

- Actively work with the Office of Institutional Advancement on the identification and submission of grant applications, RFPs and contracts for foundation and government support for the work of the Institute, as well as other resource generation to support and grow the Institute

- Work with the Law Center Communications Office on the development of a website for the Institute and develop and implement a plan for substantive website content that may include: technical subject matter information, news about Institute programs, blogs, and other relevant information.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Preparation, and Training

  • Juris Doctor degree
  • Admission to New York State Bar or any other State bar
  • Prior experience in private law firm, government or public interest organization dealing with land use and planning or related practice areas.

Skills

  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior teaching experience, which may be fulfilled by demonstrated mentoring experience.
  • Familiarity with grant application procedures
  • Familiarity with state and local institutions and programs active in land use and development (bar associations, professional societies, industry groups, etc.)
  • Planning degree and/or coursework

Physical Demands

  • GIS familiarity a plus

Travel

Attend local, regional and national conferences and programs

Local travel to governmental meetings and private law offices
