Program

Our Friday evening program will begin at 7:00 pmwith a presentation of “The Remains of Union Canal Company’s Branch Canal To Pine Grove”by Dave Ravigum- Friends of the Union Canal Tunnel Park.

On Saturday, we will board the bus for a trip to visit remaining canal structures and points of historical interest along the Pine Grove Branch of the Union Canal. We will begin at head of navigation at the 1200’ long Pine Grove Basin where coal was transferred from the Union Canal Railroad to the canal boats. Pine Grove Basin is now the site of a Veterans Canal Park where the Autumn Stroll Craft fair will be held during our visit

As we trace the route of the Pine Grove Feeder, some other sites we will be viewing on Saturday include:

  • Locks 6-9 located within Swatara State Park. Possibly Lock 5 if permission can be granted to enter area under construction within the park.
  • Site of the 48’ high Big Dam which once covered 900 acres and backed the waters up 4.2 miles to Lock 5. If the waters of the Swatara are low, part of the timber crib dam may be visiblein the bed of the creek.
  • Lock 10 below Swatara Gap.
  • Lock 14 and site of Finnegans Dam
  • Union Canal Water Works and weigh lock.
  • Brick lined culvert which once fed water by gravity flow to the summit level just west of the Union Canal Tunnel
  • Lunch at the Union Canal Tunnel Park and a boat ride thru the tunnel

After returning to the hotel in the evening, we will enjoy a sumptuous family style buffet dinner at the Farmers Wife Restaurant located 4 miles from the Lebanon Valley Inn on Rt. 22 West. The dinner will be followed by the Annual PCS Meeting and will conclude with a presentation of “A Photo History of The Branch Canal” with photos by George Wills and narration by Jim Schucker Canal Historian
