Program
On Friday evening, Scott Heberling, Heberling Associates, will offer a presentation on the formation of the LewistownNarrowsCanalPark. Scott will also have on hand photographs from the collection of founding member Dr. Ernest Coleman for location identification by our most knowledgeable members. Bill Lampert will also present period photographs of sites we will be
visiting.
On Saturday, we will board the coach for a trip to visit remaining canal structures and points of historical interest along the Juniata Division of the Main LineCanal. We will have a more leisurely tour of few choice sites we haven’t yet visited, and have more time to spend at each. We will start at the Raystown Feeder Dam & Guard Lock where dam abutments and lock walls remain.Next we will visit the Three Locks located near Lockport on the Ammons Dairy Farm. Canal side lunch in the Waterside Campground pavilion (formerly Locust Campground), will be followed by a boatride along a 1 1/2 mile watered section of canal. We will visit the new Lewistown Narrows Canal Park & Locktenders House at Lock 13.As part of the US 22/322 highway improvement project the Federal Highway Administration funded the development of a public park designed to interpret the LewistownNarrows’ transportation history, particularly the history of the Juniata Division. The canal park features a stabilized lift lock, a 1.5 mile long towpath hiking trail, a stone house once used as a locktenders house, and a picnic area. We will finish our tour at Thompson Farms, a colonial era estate later passed through by not just the Juniata Division, but two turnpikes as well. The 1791 stage road from Millerstown to Long Narrow passes by behind the Thompson house, and the more modern 1818 turnpike crosses the massive limestone bridge in front. Here we will see one of four cut stone locks of the 88 locks built on the Juniata Division complete with an original stone survey marker. We will enjoy a guided tour of the property by owners Andrew & Jean Tuzinski.
After returning to the hotel in the evening, we will enjoy a sumptuous buffet dinner at Tony’s Cottage Inn located on the premises, followed by the Annual PCS Meeting and an Evening Presentation by Paul Fageley. Paul will take on the persona of John Wright, ironmaster at Greenwood Furnace from 1849 to 1869, to explain the relationship of Greenwood, Freedom Iron Company in Burnham, and the industrial heritage of the JuniataValley.
We encourage you to attend the banquet and meeting for a chance to comment on proposed changes to the bylaws. At the PCS Directors Meeting on Sunday we will be voting on bylaws changes that give the members a greater voice in PCS activities. Following our evening program, the night owls among us will viewOf Mules and Men, The Story of Pennsylvania Canals.
