TOURage team meets in Prešov region (Slovakia) to evaluate good practices in senior tourism

TOURage is going to organize a study visit to Prešov region (Slovakia) on 13th and 14th of November where good practices suitable for senior tourism will be presented by the partners from Regional Development Agency of the Prešov Self-governing Region. During the visit six places and initiatives will be evaluated by the team of TOURage to discuss whether or not they are transferable to other regions by project partners.

TOURage study visit in Prešov region will begin in Spišský Hrhov, the small village which has taken organizing tourism activities in their own hands with the involvement of local communities. Together they have prepared “Walks through the Living Spiš”- a complete tourism package to present local historical and natural heritage. The tourism product is suitable for families and seniors and involves light leisure time activities and other tourism possibilities in the village and its surroundings. Later the TOURage team will go to visit the Ľubovňa castle, the most visited tourist attraction in Prešov region. Ľubovňa castle and an open air museum of wooden architecture are yearly visited by more than 100 000 visitors. It is observed that large part of all visitors is senior tourists. So Ľubovňa castle provides discounts and other services to senior tourists as well as to visitors with disabilities providing lots of activities outright for different age groups.

SOREA Hotels and its special tourism product aimed especially on seniors and retired persons is on the TOURage agenda. The SOREA Hotel chain prepares tourism packages in the frame of special state subsidy for seniors as well as prepares its own tourism packages for seniors. Afterwards all the project TOURAge partners will visit Nestville park, a very interesting museum of the oldest distillery in Slovakia, as they closely cooperate with SOREA Hotels and provide services for seniors.

To show more good practices promoting senior tourism in Prešov region, Preservation and promotion of wooden churches on the International wooden route will be presented. This good practice represents the challenges and opportunities of religious tourism in region next to Slovak-Polish border. The cooperation between Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Prešov and local travel agency developing products of religious tourism is worth to be presented.

Last but not least good practice in Prešov region is the project “Carpathian Sky”, an interesting initiative to support and develop tourism products based on astronomy in regions near Slovak-Polish border. Eastern Slovakia due to low light pollution has very good conditions for “sky watching”. One of the aims of “Carpathian Sky” project is mapping all these places and to create a map for all “astro-tourists” to go out and watch the sky. The astro-tourism is a new and undemanding way of spending your leisure time. And it is also suitable for all age groups including seniors as is physically suitable also for seniors.
