Topping-Out Ceremony for New DPD Parcel Sorting Centre in Steinen

Topping-out ceremony for new DPD parcel sorting centre in Steinen

•  Traditional celebration with many craftsmen and contributors to the project

•  Operational start-up of DPD’s 78th depot planned for the autumn of 2017

•  Investment of 16 million euros

Aschaffenburg, 10 May 2017 – In Steinen international parcel and express provider DPD has celebrated the topping-out ceremony for its 78th location in Germany, together with Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing as the investor and the general contractor LIST Bau Nordhorn. The traditional address at the topping-out ceremony was given in the presence of many of the building workers and other participants in the project. On an area of 30,000 m² a new parcel sorting centre is being built in Steinen, a municipality in the district of Lörrach, near the Swiss border in Baden-Württemberg. Operations at the new depot, which is being established at an investment cost of around €16 million, are planned to start as early as the autumn of this year. Initially the new location will employ a workforce of around 80, but there is capacity for significant expansion in future.

"I'm delighted that thanks to the great work done by everyone involved we will be able to start operations in Steinen soon”, states Thomas Ohnhaus, Regional Manager at DPD Deutschland. “Here in southern Germany we urgently need additional capacity, because the boom in e-commerce is causing a steady increase in parcel volumes." Thomas Ohnhaus expressed his thanks to Gunther Braun, the Mayor of Steinen, for the commitment and professionalism with which the municipal authority has supported the establishment of the depot.

The aim of the new parcel sorting centre in Steinen is above all to relieve the pressure on the existing depot in Freiburg. From Steinen DPD will serve the south-west of Germany where three countries meet, together with the Upper Rhine area. The depot region also covers the southern Black Forest down to Müllheim. Initially the Steinen depot will handle up to 10,000 parcels a day with a workforce of 80. However, there is considerable scope to expand this capacity in future.

A prominent feature of the new depot in Steinen is its high standard of energy efficiency. For example, it has its own solar installation for water heating, together with an air-water heat pump for the central heating. In addition the new depot will shorten travelling distances, which will reduce transport-related CO2 emissions. DPD's environmental and energy management system is certified to DIN 14001 and DIN 50001 standards, and DPD Germany is committed to carbon-neutral parcel shipping.
