Position: Writing and Communications/Director

Primary Accountability: Responsible for the quality and success of the Writing and Communications Program in DKU

Reports to: DKU Executive Vice Chancellor

Qualifications: Doctorate in appropriate area (Composition and Rhetoric, English, Communications, Applied Linguistics)and MA or certification in TESL/TESOL/ESL/Applied Linguistics with expertise in the theories and methods of testing and teaching ELLs; demonstrated excellence in and commitment to undergraduate and graduate-level teaching; and a strong record of scholarly and professional activities. Prior experience with the testing and methodology of second language acquisition is required. The candidate should also have at least five years of teaching and administrative experience.We seek a highly collegial and collaborative individual who will work to build and strengthen English writing and oral communication at DKU—an innovative, world-class, international institution with a signature writing and communications program for undergraduate and graduate students.

Responsibilities:
  1. Provide oversight of and direct participation in the development of a coherent and theoretically sound writing and communications program for undergraduate and graduate students in a global learning environment.
  1. Coordinate and communicate with the Thompson Writing Program and the English for International Students programs at Duke University to ensure curricular articulation between the DKU Writing and Communications program and these two entities.
  1. Collaborate with the Thompson Writing Program to establish and maintain an on-site writing and communications center at DKU that meets the needs of undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and staff.
  1. Orient new instructors to the unique needs of DKU undergraduate and graduate students andthe design of DKU programs,provideperformance expectations regarding their employment,
  1. Develop assessment tools and administer placement tests for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as assessment rubrics for evaluating curriculum outcomes of the program.
  1. Interview,select, and supervisepart time and full time ESL instructors for both tracks (undergraduate and graduate) of the program; and manage and deliver ESL classes - including monitoring, updating, and coordinating syllabi for ESL courses.
  1. Provide education to DKU academicfaculty on the needs of ELLs in general and

DKU students in particular.

  1. Teaching in the ESL program.
  1. Develop policies and forms related to monitoring and evaluation of students (attendance records, requests for TAs and tutors, exceptional circumstances, etc.)
  1. Act as the mediator in any instructor-student disagreement or conflict concerning writing and communication course grades.
  1. Schedule courses in conjunction with other DKU academic programs.
  1. In collaboration with the Thompson Writing Program, participate in goal setting and development of new writing and/or communications courses as appropriate to DKU undergraduate students.
  1. In collaboration with the EIS program, participate in goal setting and development of new writing and/or oral communication courses as appropriate to DKU graduate students.
  2. Provide full and complete reporting of all issues related to the quality and implementation of the writing and oral communication program.
