For the geographical coverage of the 31 sections see: [Table 3]

The charts pre-1470 were examined via the Pujades DVD; for later works see:

(1) On the problematic dating of the British Library's Sanudo-Vesconte atlas (Add. MS. 27376*) see:

(2) On the suggested re-dating of the '1448' Bianco chart drawn in 'London' see:

(3) The Freducci family and Sideri (Callapoda) preserved the style and toponymy of the Benincasas long after otherchartmakers had abandoned them.

To avoid distorting the general picture - since some of these red names were continued in this way for half a century after they had been generally

abandoned - a separate column has been provided in the main Excel spreadsheet ( )

for red names found on the latest available Sideri chart, that of 1565. {+30} here indicates the number of archaic instances noted.

(4) Charts produced by Diogo Homem in the period 1559-74 (two of which had been recently placed online by the BnF, Paris, and the latest of which was produced in Venice), proved to include a number of archaic names. As with Sideri (see the previous note) a separate column has again been provided in the main table for those late continuations. {+13} here indicates the number of archaic instances noted.

2. AbandonedRed name totals by individuals to 1600

The figures are of disappearances. The final column expresses those as a % of the

167 abandonedRed names

The default sort for this table is first by period and then by descending 'Total'. It can be

re-sorted and then returned to that sequence by sorting on the first column

Sort no. / Period / Place / Name / Total / % of total abandoned
