Welcome to 6th grade science AND Greenfield Middle School! Get ready for an exciting year of learning! Please read this letter carefully, and then return the with signature.
CLASS OVERVIEW
6th grade science standards focus on Earth Science. This includes Earth’s structures, plate tectonics, natural resources, conservation, geological features, energy transfer, and forces that shape the Earth and affect all life.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO CLASS?

❏3-ring binder with subject dividers and lined paper
❏Two pencils and two pens (dark ink) – NO permanent
Markers
❏Highlighters (2 colors) and a pencil sharpener
❏A spiral notebook (at least 1-subject/wide ruled) to be used ONLY for
this class. (Stays in classroom) DUE BY: ______
***At home you should also have access to colored pens, pencils or crayons, scissors and glue for projects.
What are classroom rules?All students will are expected to show RESPECT, COOPERATION, PARTICIPATION, AND PREPAREDNESS in class.
Some examples of expected behavior include:
●Following directions the first time given
●Raising your hand for permission to speak
●Treating others and materials with respect
●Being on time and prepared with work due and materials
●Being in your seat with materials ready by the bell
●Problem solving for yourself and helping others
●Completing assignments on time with quality work
●No throwing of objects in the classroom (including trash!)
●Removing hats and hoods when entering classroom
●Following school rules—cell phones off and in backpack, no hats, no sharpies, no gum, hands to yourself, no profanity, using technology as instructed, food only eaten at lunch tables, respecting school property, etc.
How will I be graded? For every assignment in class, you earn points. The more points you earn out of the total possible points, the better your grade. Some assignment categories affect your grade more than others:

Homework and Effort:10%
What do I do when I am absent?If you miss class for any reason you are absent (sick, doctors appt., vacation, etc.) it is YOUR responsibility to complete missed work. Students must make up classwork AND homework from absences.
●For each day you are absent, an equal number of days to turn in missed work for full credit. After this time, makeup work is considered late.
●Labs usually cannot be left set up for absent students. If a student misses a lab day, they will be given an alternative assignment for equal points.
Late Work
There is no good reason to turn your work in late.
Homework is NOT accepted late.
●Late work = 30% off earned points (late fee)
●Only accepted up to 1 week late
●Must be quality work and complete to be accepted late
