UKS2 Topic: World War 2 in Europe and The Battle of Britain Block D: Anne Frank and The Holocaust

This is a sensitive and age-appropriate block about the lives of the Jewish people during World War 2, the terrible discrimination and oppression and the concentration camps. Study the life of the positive and inspirational Anne Frank and create a class ‘memorial’ art installation to remember the Holocaust and the Jewish people who were killed.

Session 1: History and English
Meet Anne Frank: Her life and diary
Learn about Anne Frank and her life; write a letter sharing the personal impact of her story. / Children will:
·  ‘Meet Anne’ and learn about her life through video, pictures, and her diary.
·  Write a letter to Anne Frank, sharing the personal impact of her story.
Session 2: History and English
The Holocaust - The Ghettos and ‘Jewish laws’
Learn about the oppression of the Jews; understand life in the ghettos; write a letter protesting about the Jewish persecution. / Children will:
·  Create timelines of Jewish persecution and the ‘Jewish laws’
·  Understand life in the ghettos by discussing photos and diary entries
·  Write a letter to a newspaper that highlights the Jewish persecution
Session 3: History and English
The Holocaust - The ‘death camps’ and ‘final solution’
Study biographical stories of The Holocaust; explore emotional aspects of The Holocaust through poetry; ask searching questions about persecution and humanity. / Children will:
·  Develop understanding of the events of The Holocaust through biographical stories
·  Ask questions about The Holocaust and the issues it raises about humanity and modern persecution
·  Explore emotional aspects of The Holocaust through poetry
Session 4: History and Art
Remembering Anne Frank and the Victims of the Holocaust Through Art
Learn about Holocaust memorials; discuss why memorials are important; create a class ‘memorial’ art installation. / Children will:
·  Examine Holocaust memorials around the world and suggest why it is important to remember this event and its victims
·  Create a ‘memorial’ art installation that uses various techniques, materials and symbolism
