Topic: Introduction to iPads and Card Catalog

Goal/Objective:

The students will evaluate a question to determine keywords. They will apply the keywords to the online card catalog search engine and evaluate the information to answer the question.

Biblical Integration: Genesis 3:1-6

State Objectives:

Language Arts 0501.4.2 Discern and use appropriate reference sources in various formats (interviews with family and community; encyclopedia; card/electronic catalogs, almanacs, magazines, newspapers).

Reading 5.1.09 Develop appropriate informational skills and study skills to facilitate learning.

Standards for the 21st Century Learner:

Standard 1 – Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge

1.1.4 Find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions.

Learning Connections:

The students used an older version of the card catalog last year. During instruction/discussion students will be asked to compare and contrast old technology to new.

Materials:

Pencil per pair

Card Catalog Scavenger Hunt

Media:

Large Screen Television

iPads for every pair of students

Steps in Lesson:

  1. Students will be asked to sit in pairs at the rectangle tables.
  2. The new card catalog will be introduced as well as tips on using the iPads.
  3. The story of Adam and Eve will be read from the iPad Bible. Students will be asked to think about the choices they have when using technology.
  4. Each pair of students will be asked to take turns during the lesson.
  5. iPads, scavenger hunt handout, and pencils will be distributed to the students.
  6. Students will be asked to look at the handout. On questions 4 and 8 students will be asked to raise their hand for teacher check.
  7. Students will complete the scavenger hunt by using the GCA online card catalog.
  8. Teacher will circulate while students are working to answer questions and check on students’ progress.
  9. With 20 minutes left in class students will be asked to stop, return iPads, paper and pencils. (If students finish before time they may use the card catalog to search for topics of interest.)
  10. Students will be instructed to find an animal book for Mrs. Criss’ book report and check out two additional books.
  11. Students will come to front counter and check out books.
  12. Students will go to a reading spot and read their books or share what they learned with friends.
  13. As students leave they will be asked to tell one thing they learned in library as their ticket out the door.

Student Assessment:

The teacher will monitor the students as they work and teach/reteach skills as necessary to individuals or groups. The students will tell one thing they learned in library as their ticket out the door.
