What is Tomorrow’s Leaders about?
Tomorrow’s Leaders is a leadership course for people with learning disabilities.
It is for people who are already leaders in their area but want to become better at this. Also for people who want to put their experience of living in a hospital to good use for the benefit of others.
On the course, you will learn about:
The history of the self advocacy movement
Why services have been designed in the way they have
How government works and policies are made
How to get your point over to people
What being a strong leader means
You will have the chance to meet other people who are leaders in the disability movement.
You will make your own action plan for change – a personal project that you want to achieve.
If you want to find out more from people who have been on Tomorrows Leaders you can see it at:
How the course will be run?
Inclusion North have worked closely with the Tomorrow’s Leaders team to make sure that Tomorrow's Leaders will carry on being a really good course.
The course will be run by a small group of people. The main people running the course will be:
Samantha Clark
Chief Executive
Inclusion North
Kellie Woodley
Project Manager
Inclusion North
Andy Stafford
Actor
Lawnmowers Theatre Company
There will alsobe lots of other people who come and share their ideas or experience
As well as listening to other people you will work in groups to share your ideas and skills.
The sessions will be about having fun as well as working hard.
Everyone who takes part in the course is asked to sign up to these values:
- The values of inclusion
- We will be honest with ourselves and eachother
- Everyone has something to learn
- Everyone can contribute
- We all have prejudices we need to challenge
- Everyone has a responsibility for how they act
- Everyone is responsible for what they get out of the course
- Everyone is responsible for making the course run well
Who comes on the course and other support?
Your partner or joint learner
We are asking people to apply for a place on Tomorrow’s Leaders with a partner to support them in their work. This is because together we are better!
You need to come with a partner who:
- Will help you to take part and not put themselves first – they will support you to have a voice
- Will support you with practical things – papers, reading and writing or organising things if you need it
- Will be there on the course: finding information and helping you to prepare presentations
- Will be there in between sessions: helping you with your personal project
- Can support you to think about how you can use the things you have learned when you get back to your own area
- Will be prepared to learn from the course themselves
- Is someone you know and trust – it could be someone from a different organisation
You both need to come to every session.
If you need a Personal Assistant (PA) for personal care then you can bring this person too.
Both your partner and Personal Assistant (PA) should be there to support you to get the most out of the sessions.
They should be people who you know are a good advocate and who won’t put their own views forward before yours.
Your mentor or adviser
We ask that you have a mentor whilst you are on the course
A mentor is someone with experience who agrees to share their ideas and experience with you. A mentor is usually someone you think a lot of – someone who stands out as a person who works in a way you think is good
The kind of person you may want as your mentor:
- The co-chair of your Learning Disability Partnership Board
- A person who has got great support and helps others to get the same
- Someone you know makes a difference to others
We will explain more about how your mentor can help you at the introduction day.
Who can apply for a place on Tomorrow’s Leaders?
What sort of people are Tomorrow’s Leaders?
To get a place on the Tomorrow’s Leaders course you must already be a leader.
The kinds of things that you do in your local area that make you a leader could be:
- Being the Co-Chair or a member of your Partnership Board
- Working at your local self-advocacy group and organising the group meetings
- Running another service or group that is making things better for people with a learning disability in your area.
How will we make a decision about who gets a place?
The Tomorrow’s Leaders team will meet and look at all the applications.
Not everyone that applies will get a place. This is because we do not have spaces for everyone that applies.
This means that you will need to make your application as good as it can be.
The Tomorrow’s Leaders team will only have your application to decideif you get a place. They cannot make a decision without a good application.
There will be places for up to 13 people plus their co learner.
We will look for people who are:
Part of a strong network
Have some leadership experience – maybe you sit on your local Partnership Board
Passionate about people’s right to be included
Committed to action! Working with other people to make life better for people with learning disabilities
Don’t forget that we can only use the information you send back here to decide who gets the places.
So, please make sure you put all the information that you need to on this form even if you know people who are organising Tomorrow’s Leaders.
