Tobias Greenhalgh

Baritone

As a member of the Junges Ensemble of the Theater an der Wien for two seasons, American baritone Tobias Greenhalgh made his European debut singing the title role in Eugene Onegin. Whilst in Vienna, his roles on the mainstage included Ned Keene in Christof Loy’s universally acclaimed new production of Peter Grimes, and Littore (L’incoronazione di Poppea), alongside Escamillo (Carmen), Argante (Rinaldo) and Ramiro (L’heure espagnole), amongst others in the Wiener Kammeroper.

A graduate of The Juilliard School, Tobias went on to become a member of Palm Beach Opera’s young artist programme, where he returned as a guest artist for his debut as Schaunard (La bohème), as well as a Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of St Louis performing as both Leo Stein and Man Ray in the world premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s 27, and Samuel (Pirates of Penzance). Tobias has since performed his roles in 27 with Orchestra of St. Luke’s and returned to St Louis last season to create the leading role in the world premiere of Gordon’s The Grapes of Wrath, to great acclaim. This season, he returns to Palm Beach as Maximilian in Bernstein’s Candideand joins the Grand Teton Music Festival as Riff in West Side Story under Donald Runnicles, coordinating with the international centenary celebrations.

This season in Europe, Tobias makes his debut for Glyndebourne on Tour as Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and returns to Theater an der Wien as both Demetrius (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Cecil (Maria Stuarda). He will also join Festival d’Aix as Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas), and as part of their Académie. Other roles include Dr Falke (Die Fledermaus), which Tobias debuted for the Lehár Festival in Austria, Belcore (L’elisir d’amore) for Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, and multiple roles including the Cold Genius in King Arthurat Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz.

Described by Chicago Tribune as a “gifted and incisive young baritone,”Tobias has given recitals for Brooklyn Art Song Society (Mörike Lieder) and three programmes for the New York Festival of Song, whom he also joined in Hong Kong in collaboration with Bright Sheng for a programme of Bernstein concerts. Whilst in Vienna, hedeveloped a Winterreise project with Czech choreographer Martin Dvořák, and gave a recital at the Arnold Schoenberg Centre, where he returns this season in a new collaboration with composer Geoffrey Gordon.Tobias recently gave a gala recital at Teatro Sergio Cardoso in São Paulo, and appears at Carnegie Hall this season inEthyl Smyth’s The Prison. Concert appearances includeBach’sSt Matthew Passionwith Soli Deo Gloria, a gala concert at Alice Tully Hall with the Opera Orchestra of New York, andVaughan Williams’Five Mystical Songswith St. George’s Choral Society.

A 2015 finalist at Operalia,his most recent competition successes include first place winner in the Riccardo Zandonai Competition,first place winner of the 2013 Liederkranz Competition in the opera divison, grand prize in the Metropolitan International Music Festival Competition and first place in the Mario Lanza Competition amongst others.

Additionally, Tobias is the co-creator ofOperation Superpower, a superhero opera for children that promotes an anti-bullying stance from early school years. The opera was featured on a PBS Newshour special on entrepreneurship in the classical arts.
