TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

I was asked by the owner of ANDANDO to inspect the preparation and finish of the interior after it had been refurbished and painted.

My first sighting of the job was on the 28th of May at Bayswater Marina (E.65). I was shocked to think professional tradespersons would think that this was a finished product.

From what I understand the interior paint (waterbased) had bubbled and had to be removed.

My personal opinion is that the removal processes has made the coves (the rounded areas in the corners of the coamings where it joins the hulls and interior furniture) uneven. They have sanded or scraped these areas making them unfair. It has cut into the epoxy coving material which has an extender of glass bubbles and when sanded it becomes very rough. When these bubbles are cut it requires a lot of preparation and coatings to make it smooth again. There are also air bubbles in these areas which have not been filled. In the contract it stipulates “fairing and preparation for painting”. This has been missed out in large percentage of the job. It would seem that they have been relying on paint to cover the lack of fairing, which never works and never will.

The deep blisters showing in the cove of the interior may have come from epoxy coving that was done when the boat was built not curing properly. Possibly the heat of burning off has brought them out. They need to be dug out back to solid glass, refilled, faired and recoated.

In other areas there are runs where too much paint has been applied and it has run down the vertical surface. In some areas the runs have been sanded out and left unfinished.

There is cracking in doorways and large corners. I think this probably comes from the construction or timber used. I don’t think it is a paint problem.

To rectify the problem these problems the following steps should be taken :

1.  Fill and fair all holes and defects.

2.  Completely sand and fair the whole area.

3.  Apply Hi Build undercoat and re-sand.

4.  Spray on two coats of Reaction Lacquer Semigloss.

Yours faithfully
