Name______Summer 2015
To The English One Honors English Student,
Below you will find your assignment for the Summer of 2015. Please have the following completed before you enter the classroom in September.
Read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and see the full assignment below (with two required parts and one optional part).
Please complete the following two required assignments in a notebook (or typed) over the summer. I will collect assignments 1 and 2 on the second day of school. After the scored assignment is returned to you, we will spend a few weeks working with the text.
Required Part 1. Topic/Theme Analysis (45 points)
Directions: While you are reading the novel, please take specific notes in a notebook (or typed) that I will check on the second day of school. I also suggest that you add sticky notes to your book where the theme evidence and quotations exist in order to go back and find them as needed. For each topic/theme, you must have at least three provable examples from various points in the text and one quote per example to support them. You must also include page numbers, so that the examples and quotes can be retrieved and used in class for discussion and an essay that will be assigned. Topics/Themes to use:
1. Loss of innocence (or, children often lose their innocence when exposed to the evils and realities of the world)
2. Bravery comes in many different forms other than just physical.
3. It is important to look at the world from other people's perspectives in order to avoid incorrectly judging them.
Required Part 2. Character Analysis (45 points)
Directions: The book is split into two parts; take notes on the development of the characters listed below in your notebook (or typed), but I also suggest you use sticky notes to easily get back to pages. After reading part one, decide on 1 specific character traits for each of the three characters listed below. Also, include two specific examples and one quotation from the text that prove the character trait that you selected. Complete this same activity after Chapter 21 and at the end of the book. So, by the end of the book, you should have at 3 provable character traits with two examples and one quote each based on the beginning, middle and end of the book. Be prepared to also discuss and prove whether or not the characters change during the course of the novel. All evidence will be used for a character analysis essay. Characters to use: Atticus Finch, Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, and Jeremy "Jem" Finch
