Re: Spring Luncheon Meeting

Our Spring Luncheon Meeting will be held on Friday, May 11, from 12 noon to 2:00pm, at the Sheraton Conference Center in Burlington. Wolfgang Mieder, Professor of German and Folklore at the University of Vermont will be our guest speaker. Professor Mieder earned his B.A. at Olivet College in French and German, his M.A. in German at the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in German at Michigan State University. He is well recognized as an international leader in research on folklore and proverbs, and is the Editor of Proverbium:Yearbook of International Proverb Scholarship. Among his many books are A Dictionary of American Proverbs, Proverbs Are Never out of Season: Popular Wisdom in the Modern Age, Proverbs Are the Best Policy: Folk Wisdom and American Politics, Proverbs Speak Louder Than Words: Folk Wisdom in Art, Culture, Folklore, History, Literature, and Mass Media, Making a Way Out of No Way: Martin Luther King's Sermonic Proverbial Rhetoric, and Dictionary of Modern Proverbs. He has been a Guest Professor at the University of Freiburg, and at the University of California/ Berkeley. Professor Mieder was selected as University Scholar in the first year of awarding this recognition at the University of Vermont, and also has received the George V. Kidder Outstanding Faculty Award. Professor Mieder will speak to us on the timely topic “It takes a Village to Change the World: Proverbial Politics and the Ethics of Place.”

We will have a short business meeting following the presentation by Professor Mieder. Agenda items at the business meeting will include introduction of current members of the Executive Board, an update on the website for our organization, (easily accessed by typing RFAO UVM on Google), an update on the Association for Retirement Organizations in Higher Education, an update on progress for dedicated space for Retired Faculty in the new Alumni House and commentary on proposed changes to our Constitution. Please note that you will be able to obtain new Emeriti parking permits at the meeting between 11:00am and 1:00pm.
