Re: Case Project 1

Dear Joyce --

Thank you for offering the business course Business Information Architecture. Writing is a highly praised skill in the business world and when used effectively is extremely powerful. To get an understanding of my personal writing skills I will explain my writing experiences, writing in past work situations, current problems with my own writing, and my concerns regarding writing in this course.

In the past I have done several different types of writing. These types of writing include a formal research paper, project proposals, book reports, and personal essays. I have had experience with each type of writing in the courses I have taken over the past three years. Currently, the only writing I do is for school. I have taken all of the required English courses at Vermont Tech, and achieved the highest awarded grades as a result. The writing classes that I have taken in the past have been very pleasant. I originally started in the lowest English class and have learned from the ground up about writing. Although I have taken many courses at Vermont Tech I prefer the computer courses the most because they relate to my major.

My attitude towards writing is different from subject to subject. When I am writing about a subject I am not keen on I have a harder time trying to get the words on the paper because I do not feel interested in the topic. My biggest problem when it comes to writing is getting all of my thoughts clearly onto the paper. Sometimes I let my fingers move faster than my brain, and it ends with me making common mistakes or grammatical errors. I am satisfied with my writing when I take my time and effectively get my point across. It becomes a burden when I am not able to accomplish this.

Currently my work involves me working at Vermont Tech’s Shape facility at the gym front desk. The only writing that is accomplished by me at work is just converting handwritten notes from my supervisor into an electronic copy. When I convert their notes I am able to fix any grammatical errors or simple typos. The main thing I notice about other people’s writing at work is that it seems rushed and not as thoughtful as it should be. This keeps me on my feet and allows me to get more experience with writing.

This course looks like it is going to be interesting because it involves writing in the business world. Even though my writing skills are a little rusty from the lack of writing over the summer I will be able to get back into the groove of it soon. I am intrigued about writing in the business world and how to stand out from competitors. From this course I want to be able to effectively write for any occasion whether it is for a college course or an email to a future supervisor. Being able to do effectively write in the business world will be meaningful to me because I will feel confident when in the working world. I am looking forward to what I will achieve in this class and be able to use once I graduate.

Writing effectively is an important skill to build throughout life. From my past experiences to my current ones in this course I am excited to see how my writing will improve. Even though I can easily make mistakes with my writing, I am glad to take Business Information Architecture and have the ability to write in the business world effectively.

Cordially,

Kyle Emmons
