How the Tournament will Work

Tournament Regulations

  • All team players will play in each game. There will be aneight player rotation with six on the court and two players on the sideline. Teams will rotate each time service is received/won.
  • Games will be announced when courts open up to play them. Any team that fails to take the court within five minutes of their game being announced will forfeit that game.
  • Dress Code – All participants must be wearing sneakers, socks, shorts or athletic pants, and a t-shirt. Players may wear knee pads.
  • Optional Team Gear – To make the tournament as successful as possible, we are encouraging each team to create their own team t-shirts, head bands, wear face paint, or colors.

Tournament Rules

Each court will have a faculty or high school student referee who will enforce the rules listed below. All referee decisions are final, with NO APPEALS allowed.

To make all games consistent, the following game play rules apply:

  1. All eight players on the team will play in each game. There will be an eight player rotation (with six on the court and two on the sideline) that will rotate each time the service is received/won.
  2. All games will use “Rally Scoring”, where a team does not have to serve in order to score! Therefore the team without the serve will get the point AND the serve when the other team commits an illegal hit, allows the ball to hit the floor in bounds, fails to serve legally, or otherwise loses the point.
  3. All 1st round games will be 21 points to win, and each game must be won by at least 2 points. Therefore, any game reaching a score of 21-20 will continue until one team goes ahead by 2 points. All other rounds will require 15 points to win, and each game must be won by at least 2 points.
  4. A team may not use more than three hits to return any volley or serve. The fourth hit by any team will result in a dead ball and either a point for the other team (if the offending team is not on serve) or a loss of serve (if on serve).
  5. The ball may not be “carried” or otherwise lifted on any hit. This will immediately result in a dead ball and either a point for the other team (if the offending team is not on serve) or a loss of serve (if on serve).
  6. While a team may return any volley or serve on the first hit, a serve may not be SPIKED back. Any live ball may be played off the net except for a serve, which will be ruled a dead ball upon hitting the net. Any ball that hits a ceiling obstruction is a dead ball, resulting in a point for the other team (if the offending team is not on serve) or a loss of serve (if on serve).
  7. Teams must rotate their players upon receiving the serve. There must be a setup of three players on the front line, with the other three playing in back.
  8. This is a single elimination tournament. After a team loses its first game, they may leave the court, but must stay to support the remaining teams.
  9. The tournament championship will be a ONE GAME – WINNER TAKE ALL FINAL. The game will be played to 25.
  10. There will be 2 courts set up in the gym, allowing up to 4 teams to play at once. Students who enter the gym may not leave the gym until the games are over.
  11. Absolutely no food or drinks may be brought into the gym;regardless of the fact that food/drink may be on sale. This rule will be strictly enforced by Faculty chaperones!
