SUBJECT: OPENING OF SCHOOL/2007-08

It’s almost time for a new school year to begin! We hope that you have enjoyed your summer break and are ready to return to school refreshed for an exciting new year of learning and adventure. Our school-wide theme for the 2008-2009 school year will borrow from the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Our motto will be “One School, One Dream.”

The first day of school for students is Tuesday, August 12. The first day of school is a full day, 8:10 A.M.-3:00 P.M. Students may begin to arrive as early as 7:30 A.M. Please remember to avoid using the circle when dropping off or picking up students. This area is designated for use by school buses only. We also ask that you use marked parking spots, deliver your student(s) to the student drop-off area, and exercise extreme caution as you drive to and from campus. These requests are made for the safety of all the students, staff, and visitors at Southside Elementary.

Please make plans to attend our “Back to School” night on Monday, August 11. The event is scheduled from 5-7 P.M. Parents will have the opportunity at this time to file out essential forms, meet with teachers, tour the building, and pay school fees. This is a wonderful opportunity to see some of the physical changes that have taken place to the building (new paint, new doors, new playground equipment, etc.). We look forward to seeing everyone and showing a new look for Southside Elementary School!

We are very proud of the dedicated staff at Southside. This year we welcome Mrs. Jenny McIlvain to our staff. Mrs. McIlvain is an experienced teacher of solid reputation and will be joining our second grade team. As our enrollment has changed, we’ve made some changes to better meet the needs of our students. Thus, Mrs. Mara Gant will remain with our second grade team and Mrs. Stacey Smiley will be moving from second grade to Kindergarten.

Mrs. Kimberly True and Mr. Jeff Jackson will be serving as your parent representatives on the school council this coming year. Ms. Kerstin DeRolf will be serving as PTO President again this school year. If you have questions about our council or our volunteer program, please contact the office at 234-7120. You may also wish to mark your calendars for Grandparent’s Days and Southside’s Fall Festival. K-2 Grandparent’s Day is scheduled for September 5 and 3-5 for September 12. The Fall Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4. For more details on these and other events you may call the school or check Mr. Fowler’s blog (http://www.harrison.k12.ky.us/virtual/south/fowler/).

If you live in Southside’s school district and have not yet registered your child, please do so as soon as possible. It is our belief that together we can make many happy memories and rewarding experiences for your child during this school year. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or the office any time you have questions, comments, or concerns. Good communication throughout the school year is an essential element in ensuring success. As a team committed to children, we can continue to make wonderful things happen for our students, our school, and our community! We are looking forward to another great school year as we “go for the gold.”
