Task 9– Press Release 2
To be written by those NOT taking part in the debate
You may do this task in pairs if you wish.
All those students who are NOT taking part in the debate, should draft a brief press release describing the event.
The date and place are:
Wednesday 14 December 09.00Room 108 School of International Studies UNITN
Here are links to a few authentic press releases, the first two on a similar topic, the other an announcement for an upcoming debate:
Below are a few examples of press releases for previous debates held at the School of International Studies written by former classmates. While the topics are different, the task is similar! However, as these are pieces of student work, not all of them are perfect. They are just to give you an idea of the kind of press release that is required.
It is a good idea to look at some of these and then draw up a list of all the elements found in this kind of press release before you start. After writing your press release, you should then check you have included them all!
Please send your press release to me by email not later than Friday 9 December.
BRINGING AN END TO THE SYRIAN CRISIS: MILITARY INTERVENTION?
UPCOMING DEBATE ON MILITARY INTERVENTION IN SYRIA
Date and Time: Wednesday, 11 December 2013, at 11:15 a.m.
Location: Room 14, School of International Studies, Via Tommaso Gar 14
TRENTO, December 8, 2013 – On Wednesday, 11 December a debate will be held by the students of the School of International Studies on the issue of military intervention in Syria.
After almost three years of civil war, the Syrian government's use of chemical weapons against rebel forces and the severity of the humanitarian disaster have triggered international concern and ongoing discussions about the possibility of foreign military intervention to put an end to the crisis.
Starting from the motion "this house believes that military intervention is the only way to bring an end to the Syrian crisis," two sides of the panel will provide arguments for or against military action. Each panelist will explain why, in his or her opinion, the Syrian crisis might or might not be solved by intervening militarily and then the panelists will debate the issue. A Q&A session involving the audience will follow the debate.
The Panel will include:
Claudia Careri,
Joseph Mendy,
Silvia Prati, debating in favour of the intervention
Claudia Deavi,
Alexander Ivanchev,
Kamran Ismayilov, debating against the intervention
Angela Han Shiyun, acting as chair.
The event is free and open to all students.
BRINGING AN END TO THE SYRIAN CRISIS: MILITARY INTERVENTION?
The School of International Studies – Trento presents the debate over the Syrian Crisis.
Experts will be arguing their opinion over the motion “This house believes that military intervention is the only way to bring an end to the Syrian crisis”
The debate will address the actual situation with the ongoing war within Syria and consider whether military intervention is the possible solution. Its positive and negative effects will both be analysed. The Syrian Uprising began 2 years and 8 months ago and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has estimated that so far 165,835 people were killed. The United Nations reports that 2,2 million refugees have fled to neighbouring countries.
Experts will be divided between those in favour and those against the motion and each member will present its opinion. A session for Q&A will follow the debate.
