CONTINUOUS MINER OPERATOR

TASK: To operate continuous miner in a safe manner by not advancing beyond the last row of roof support, to keep entries driven on centers, and to maintain the designated width of the opening. To cut and load coal in a safe manner. To perform such other additional work as is deemed necessary by management to achieve safe and efficient job performance. The job safety briefing is to be used only as a guide for conducting a thorough job safety briefing. After completion, a 5000-23 must be filled out with the appropriate task listed.

OPERATION / HAZARD / RECOMMENDED SAFETY PROCEDURE
Pre-operational
Walk Around
Inspection / Defective or
Damaged
Equipment / Observe breaker handle at transformer.
Check for proper I.D. tag. If plug is out and tagged, do not operate. Visually inspect trailing cable from transformer to miner, checking for bad splices, cuts in cable, exposed leads, etc.
Energizing the Miner / Electrical Shock and Burns / Check headlights, panic bar, methane detector, water sprays, bits and bit lugs, covers and guards, oil levels, levers and buttons and tram levers to make sure they operate freely. Check fire suppression and proximity system if equipped
Face Examination / Roof and Rib falls / Always sound roof in immediate work area. Never walk under unsupported roof. Sound ribs in immediate work area and work down all loose or doubtful areas with a slate bar. Maintain proper body position and a safe line of retreat.
Methane ignition and oxygen deficiency / Make test for methane before taking machine in past the last open cross cut. Make test for methane every 20 minutes using a probe, while machine is in the place.
Check the permissibility of machine. Maintain curtain to CH4 and Dust plan curtain setback at all times. Be sure check curtains are up and tight.
Tramming / Not maintaining clearance / Be aware of other personnel around the machine. Be sure area is clear before swinging conveyor tail or lowering head. Keep all persons out of the RED ZONE at all time wile tramming. If you have to go into the red zone be sure that the pump motor is off and the remote box is not on your person.
Trailing Cables / Running over trailing cables-electrical
shock, fire, tripping
hazards / Be sure that cables are properly suspended across entries and roadway. Always place cables as close to the rib as possible to prevent damage by mobile equipment. Always be aware of the amount of slack available. When moving the miner and helper is looping cable over the cutting head or tail, be sure the helper is in the clear at all times. If you do run over trailing cables, notify the supervisor so it can be checked.
Mining Coal / Excessive Widths / Always stay on center with the sights made by the section foreman. In instances where allowable widths are exceeded, temporary supports should be set to narrow the opening.
Excessive Coal Spillage / DO NOT overload the shuttle car. Establish communication signal with car operator for maximum load and stop coal chain when signal is received. Coal that is spilled must be cleaned up by shoveling, by panning with the miner, or by scoop before it can be rock dusted.
Excessive Dust / Make sure that water sprays are functioning properly and not broken or clogged. Using a proper tool, replace worn or broken bits. Maintain water hose in good condition and replace if a leak develops. Make sure that ventilation curtain is maintained according to the plan. Wear respirator and replace filters frequently. Use water sprays when tramming if entry is dry.
Unsupported Top / Hang approved warning device at end of cut, whether full cut or partial.
Noise Exposure / Wear suitable hearing protection as required to lower noise exposure.
Eight-Hour Shift Activity / Unattended Equipment / Report any unsafe condition of machine which have not been corrected to on-coming operators. Never permit excessive accumulations of oil or coal on machine. Lower cutter head and conveyor tail to lowest position.
Equipment cannot be parked with 25' of curtain.

NOTE: At this time a supervised practice in the operation of the equipment is required.
