Key Responsibilities / Supporting Students
  • To be familiar with the needs of SEN pupils and to anticipate their needs with regard to learning, behaviour and organisation.
  • To be familiar with, or to assess quickly the learning objectives and content of a lesson.
  • In liaison with the teacher, to decide upon the best ways of helping targeted SEN students to access the materials and to undertake the tasks.
  • In liaison with the teacher, to differentiate tasks appropriately where this is possible.
  • To assist students with physical needs
  • To help promote independent learning.
  • To promote the development of organisational and study skills.
  • To avoid completing tasks for a student who makes no input.
  • To help keep students on task, to provide positive reinforcement and to build motivation.
  • To help build the confidence of all SEN students and to enhance their self-esteem.
  • To help supervise practical tasks
  • To participate in the assessment of tasks
  • When assigned to support individual students, to keep appropriate records and to monitor progress.
  • To contribute to review meetings.
To be able to deliver the learning to groups of students as directed by the class teacher or Head of Faculty
Preparation and assessment.
Where time is allocated for such tasks:
  • To meet with teachers of assigned classes to contribute to planning lessons and activities.
  • To help prepare materials and resources.
  • To help differentiate materials
  • To help assess work.
To help display work.
Other duties and Requirements
  • To attend faculty and department meetings as directed by the Head of Faculty
  • To act as a reader or scribe for students who are granted special access arrangements for examinations
  • To provide learning support for statemented/EHCP students
  • To attend AEN specific training events as directed
  • To provide reports on specific students for the AEN faculty, for House and for faculty as required
To accompany students on educational visits as required
  • To fulfil the role of a co-tutor
Tutoring
With the co-tutor:
  • To ensure that tutorials are conducted in accordance with school policy.
  • To liaise closely with the Head of House with regard to individuals in the tutor group and House Activities.
  • To receive students at the tutor room, to establish silence, to ensure they enter the room quietly and calmly, and that they are silent before being asked to sit.
  • To set a tone of calmness, self- discipline and trust within the tutor group.
  • To care professionally for students within the tutor group and to show them kindness.
  • To get to know students as individuals and to take an interest in their lives and concerns.
  • To be alert for any bullying or other cause of unhappiness within the Academy, to deal with it where possible, and if not possible, to refer it to the Head of House.
  • To establish routines within tutorials that support students in being calm, self-disciplined and well-organised.
  • To support students in being prepared for the session ahead.
  • To celebrate the achievements of students and to build their self-esteem.
  • To promote participation in House Activities.
  • To be firm with students, ensuring that they are silent when required, and that they are fully on task when given tasks to complete.
  • To ensure that students are always productively engaged during tutorials.
  • To ensure that older students within the tutor group are given responsibilities appropriate to their age and maturity, are encouraged to care for and look out for younger students, and that they receive positive feedback for their work.
  • To complete the register and to reconcile absences with notes from parents in accordance with Academy policy.
  • To encourage students in achieving high levels of attendance and punctuality.
  • To record credits from planners onto the documentation provided, and to train older students to complete this task for you, monitoring their work.
  • To monitor “Around Academy” comments in the planner, and to assign detentions in accordance with the Behaviour Policy.
  • To take responsibility for the Academic progress of a part of the tutor group.
  • To discuss students’ academic progress with members of the teaching staff.
  • To hold a mentoring interview with each one every six weeks during tutorial time in accordance with the Assessment Policy and Assessment Calendar, and to make any required entry into the students’ reports.
  • Within mentoring meetings, to engage with parents and students in celebrating achievements and setting targets for future improvement.
  • To support the student in developing a vision for his/her future career, and to liaise with the work experience coordinator so that appropriate visits and opportunities may be created.
  • To escort students to assembly so that they walk correctly in a calm and quiet manner, to ensure they enter the assembly hall in silence and remain silent throughout.
  • To help dismiss students from assembly.
To dismiss students silently from the tutor room, taking responsibility for their behaviour as they enter the walkway.

  • To be professional, friendly and respectful towards all colleagues, and to address any concerns through proper channels.
  • To be professional, friendly, fair and firm with students, demonstrating the sort of politeness and respectfulness that we wish them to emulate.

  • To develop a relationship with students that is professional, firm, fair, caring and friendly, and based upon mutual respect.
  • To maintain an appropriate and professional distance with students in more informal situations, or when dealing with sixth form students.
  • Using the Academy Behaviour Policy, to deal with student behaviour in a manner which is appropriate to the context. This may be firmly and authoritatively, or more flexibly depending upon the situation.
  • To deal with students in a manner that conveys mutual respect.
  • Not to behave towards students in a manner which is aggressive, intimidating, or demeaning in any way.
  • To have regard to the Academy’s Contact Policy when it is necessary to restrain a student or to use physical force.
