To all to whom these Presents shall come,
GREETING
Know ye, That Lot M. Morrill
our Governor, reposing special trust and confidence in the sobriety, discretion, and
piety of
John W. Lewis
of Warren, A Licensed Minister of the
Gospel, hath nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of our Council,
[State Seal, Lot M. Morrill signature] appointed the said John W. Lewis
to Solemnize Marriages in each and every of our Counties within the State:
We therefore do hereby authorize and empower him to fulfill the duties of that office
according to law; and to have and to hold the said office, together with all the powers, privileges, and
emoluments thereto of right appertaining, to him the said John W Lewis
during the pleasure of our Governor for the time being.
In testimony whereof, We have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and our
Seal to be hereunto affixed.
Witness, our Governor, at the Council Chamber in Augusta, the first
day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and fifty-eight and of the Independence of the United
States the eighty-second

On the thirteenth day of September A.D. 1858, personally appeared
John W Lewis of Warren in said County
of Lincoln and took the subscribed oaths prescribed by the Constitution
of this State and a Law of the United States, to qualify him to discharge and execute the trusts
reposed in him by his appointment and commission authorizing him to SOLEMNIZE MARRIAGES in each
and every County within the State, made and issued July 1 1858.
