TO: All NGATN Members of the Tennessee National Guard

SUBJECT: Fifth Third Bank Scholarships

1. Fifth Third Bank of Tennessee has generously donated $10,000 to the National Guard Association of Tennessee for Educational Scholarships in 2017. This is their way of thanking our members for their service to this great nation. Scholarship recipients will be presented their awards at the business session of the NGATN 88th Annual Conference at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center, Murfreesboro, TN on Saturday, 25 March 2017. There will be seven (7) scholarships awarded according to the following categories.

SCHOLARSHIP A: Two (2) $1,000 scholarships earmarked for an Enlisted member of the Tennessee Army or Air National Guard who is also a current member of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of Tennessee (EANGTN). If an active member does not qualify for the scholarships, it will be awarded to a qualified dependent of an annual active member or a retired life member of EANGTN.

SCHOLARSHIP B: Two (2) $1,000 scholarships earmarked for an Officer or Warrant Officer of the Tennessee Army or Air National Guard who is also a current member of the National Guard Association of Tennessee (NGATN). If an active member does not qualify for the scholarships, it will be awarded to a qualified dependent of an annual active member or a retired life member of NGATN.

SCHOLARSHIP C: Three (3) $2,000 scholarships earmarked for qualified dependents of an annual active member or a retired life member of NGATN. ** Please refer to the last page of the application for the additional requirement regarding this scholarship.

*Scholarships A and B can be used for graduate studies.

**Scholarship C has an additional requirement.

FIFTH THIRD BANK 2017 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR THE TENNESSEE NATIONAL GUARD

1. PURPOSE:

a. Scholarships for attendance at an accredited College or University shall be granted to outstanding active members of the Tennessee Army or Air National Guard or their dependents. Service members must be active annual or active life members of the National Guard Association of Tennessee (NGATN).

b. In the event that a scholarship recipient is called to duty and deploys, their scholarship funds will be retained until they return.

c. The scholarship grants will be paid directly to the College or University of the recipient's choice.

d. Fifth Third Bank has asked that these scholarships be administered through NGATN.

2. ELIGIBILITY:

a. Each applicant must be a high school senior or graduate. The applicant must meet requirements for entrance in the College or University of their choice or be eligible for continued attendance if already enrolled. Active members who are enrolled in accredited distant learning degree-awarding programs through Military Educational Offices are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

b. The applicant must have demonstrated traits and qualities of leadership by having participated in school and civic activities; demonstrate a strong motivation for continued higher education; and have shown above average academic achievement in high school and or college.

c. Selection of the Scholarship recipients is based upon the merits of the application for the awards. The decision of the NGATN Scholarship Committee is final. Only one Scholarship shall be awarded to any applicant and for not more than one year.

4. APPLICATION FORMS: Only one copy of the application is required. Supporting documents (one copy each) are as follows:

a. Official transcript of High School Record. (If already enrolled and attending college, applicant will only need to submit a copy of their high school diploma.)

b. A letter of recommendation from High School Principal recounting extracurricular activities. (If applicant is already enrolled and attending college, the letter of recommendation can come from any reputable source that has knowledge of the applicants present or past extracurricular activities.)

c. A copy of most recent college transcript, if applicable.

d. A letter from applicant with specific facts as to their desire to continue their education. This letter should reflect sufficient information and insight that will give the NGATN Scholarship Committee a "word" picture of the applicant and reveal the hopes, ambitions and desires of this individual.

e. Letters of reference are encouraged.

f. A recent photograph (preferably in JPEG format) sent digitally to ; subject “Fifth Third Scholarship”.
