To: All Level 3 Recreational Players - Important

Subject: Upcoming Spring 2017 Ranking Process Changes, Responsibilities and Timeline

Many of you are new to our club and have not experienced the twice yearly ranking process. Others not desiring to play at the Competitive Level may not have participated in previous years. In addition, there are some changes from the past, so please read the following.

The Ranking process has two phases and when complete determines the ‘ranked order’ for Level 5 (Net 1) and Level 6 (Net 2) players, and the top 4 Level 3 players who are eligible to move up to fill vacancies at Level 5 for the next 6 months.

·  Phase 1 determines the top 4 Level 3 players who will ‘try out’ for Level 5. (New this year) All Level 3 players will participate in ranking those Level 3 players who have signed up to participate in the trials. At Level 5 the same process is occurring for determining the top 4 players who will try out for Level 6. Once this ranking to determine eligibility to ‘try out’ is complete, the rest of the Level 3 players have completed their responsibility in the process.

·  Phase 2

o  The top 4 Level 3 players participate in ‘trials’ on Net 1 with the remaining Level 5 players and the top 4 Level 5 players move to Net 2 to participate in ‘trials’ with Level 6.

o  At the end of the trial playing period, each level ranks the players at their respective levels for the final rosters.

o  Thelast 4 rankedLevel 6 (Net 2) will become thefirst 4on Level 5. Thelast 4 rankedon Level 5 (Net 1) will become thefirst 4 rankedon Level 3.

****Phase 1 Level 3 Process****

·  Monday, March 6th 5pm: Deadline to sign up for participating in Level 5 trials. There will be a new sign-up sheet at the side of the monitor desk. If you have already signed up, your name will be placed on this sheet.

·  Tuesday, March 7th 5pm: Ranking sheets (a list of those Level 3 players wishing to participate in Level 5 trials) will be available for each Level 3 player in the same location. Be sure to take only your own sheet.

o  On the back of the ranking sheet will be the same skills evaluation worksheet that is used when moving through the Recreational levels 1-3. It is important that you consider these skills in ranking the listed players. You may wish to assess the participant’s capabilities by using the evaluation worksheet.

o  Ultimately you will assign a number to each participant starting with 1 as the highest.

o  (New this year) Participants cannot rank themselves.

o  Keep in mind, they cannot play aggressively during recreational play, but they will be moving to a competitive environment. Players are expected to serve well, pass and set the ball at Level 5.

o  Ranking is confidential and your name is not on the ranking sheet, just a number to keep track of how many are out, and avoid duplicate voting.

o  Participants who are trying out may want to be sure your peers know your name, and that you desire to play competitively since many of you are new to our club.

·  Friday, March 17th 5pm: The Level 3 Ranking Sheets are due. Place in the ballot box at the monitor desk for collecting the Ranking Sheets.

·  The top 4 Level 3 players who are eligible to participate in the Level 5 ‘trial period’ will be notified by email and phone as soon as the ranking tabulation is completed over the weekend.

·  Monday, March 20th 6:45pm: Level 5 ‘trial play’ begins on Net 1. It is important that you play as often as you can (Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) so the Level 5 players can accurately assess your ability to play at their level before they rank you.

·  Thursday, April 6th: Trial playing period ends and Level 5 Ranking Sheets are due.

·  Saturday, April 8th: Ranking tabulation is complete and results available. Top 22 players for Level 6, top 22 players for Level 5, and top 4 Level 3 players are notified, new sign-up sheets are available for Level 5 and Level 6 play the following Monday night.

·  Monday, April 10th: All players play at their new assigned level (3, 5 or 6).

Note: Those trying out for Competitive Level 5 may wish to attend the training class next Tuesday at 6pm as both recreational and competitive training drills will be conducted.

If you have any questions, please use the WVB email: , or speak with any Steering Committee or Recreational Players Sub-committee member or Linda Scott.
