Class Search
Class Search is the real-time, online schedule of classes. Class Search allows you to search all courses being offered in a particular termbased on a variety of criteria.
Accessing Class Search
To access Class Search, follow one of the paths below:
If your role is: / Access Class Search this way:SIS User / SIS: >Self Service >Class Search >Class Search

Using Class Search
To access and navigate Class Search, follow the steps below:
Step / ActionIf using SIS, select from your Main Menu:
>Self Service>Class Search >Class Search (shows 4 most recent published terms)
- or-
>Curriculum Management >Schedule of Classes >Class Search History (shows all terms)
On the Enter Search Criteria page,
select Term and fill in other desired field(s) to narrow your class search.
Tip: The fields and their usage are described in the following section,
“Class SearchField Descriptions”.

Press [Enter]. -or- Select [Search].
On the Course List page, selectView Sections if you want to view more detail.
On the Search Results page selectClass# orSection# to view more information.
The Class Detail page displays. To exit, select [View Search Results].

If desired, on the Search Results page selectEnrollment Packages for Courseor on the Course List page selectEnrollment Packages, to view more information.
Then select [Return].
Class SearchField Descriptions
When using the Class Search, Enter Search Criteria page, fill in as many fields as you need to define your search; otherwise, leave the other fields blank. Term and only one other field needs to be filled in to run a search.
The table below describes the fields, buttons, and links found on the Enter Search Criteriapage:
Field, Button, or Link / DescriptionInstitution / Always displays UW–Madison.
Term / Select a term (semester).
School or College / Select desired school or college.
Subject / Select desired subject.
Subject identifies the Academic Department.
Course Number / Type in the desired three-digit numeric catalog number. CatalogNumber identifies a course within a Subject area.(e.g., 211, 699)
Tip:You can search using the parameters drop-down list.
Show Open Classes Only / Check this box to search for classes with the Status of ‘Open’.
Uncheck this box to search for all classes with the Status of ‘Open’ or ‘Closed’ or ‘Wait List’.
Course Keyword / Type in keyword(s); All Course Titles(which includes topic titles) and Course Descriptions will be searched.
Mode of Instruction / Select desired mode (e.g., Classroom Instruction, Online (some classroom), Onlineonly,).
Minimum Units
Maximum Units / Type the number of units (credits) or range desired.
Tip:You can search using the parameters drop-down list.
Communication and Quantitative Reasoning -General Education Requirements(g) / Select desired type of course wanted, Communication Part A or B, or Quantitative Reasoning Part A or B.
Ethnic Studies(e) / Select ETHN if you only want to search for courses that satisfy the ethnic studies requirement.
Breadth(B) / Select Breadth preference you desire.
Level(L) / SelectLevel preference you desire.
L&S Credit (C) / Select ‘Counts for LAS credit L&S’ if desired.
Counts Toward 50% Grad / Select ‘Counts in 50% grad coursework’ if desired.
Honors Requirement Desig. / SelectHonors preference, if any.
Special Groups
/ Select a special group if desired:
- Service Learning
- Res Halls/Learning Community
- WI Emerging Scholars
- Transfer Section
Meeting Start Time
/ Select time parameters from drop-down box and
type in a start time value ending in am or pm.
Meeting End Time
/ Select time parameters from drop-down box and
type in an end time value ending in am or pm.
Days of Week / Select your preference from the drop-down list
based on checked Day of Week
… / Check the boxes for class days you wish to search based on the Days of Weekcriteria selected above.
Instructor Last Name / Type in Instructor’s last name and change the drop-down selection if needed (begins with, contains, is exactly).
Class Nbr (5 digit) / Type in the five-digit class number.
Each section has a unique class number.
[Clear] / Select to clear all criteria from the Search for Classes page.
[Search] / Select[Search] button to run the search based on all the criteria entered on the Search for Classes page.
If there are no matches, the following message displays: “The search returns no results that match the criteria specified”.
Tip: Redefine your search and [Search] again.
If there is one or more than one match, the Class Search Results - Course List page displays.
