Brackley Town Council

Volunteer Role Description

Title Volunteer Tour Guide

Location Brackley Town Hall

Purpose of the Role

To lead Tours of Brackley’s conservation area at the Heritage Open Day Festival (8th/9th September)

Role Context

Brackley Town Hall was built in 1704 and has always played an important role in life in Brackley. The Town Council has recently received generous funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to regenerate the Town Hall; to restore some of the building’s beautiful, but neglected features, to inject some new life into the building and to secure it’s future as an important, impressive and functional building.

Even though the Town Hall is closed, the restoration project will still be partaking in the Heritage Open Day Festival this year. The festival will be based at the Old Fire Station and will include updates on the Town Hall and information about the history of the Fire Station and other local historic buildings in Brackley. One of the national themes of the festival this year is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Conservation Areas. As Brackley have two conservation areas, our Heritage Open Day celebrations will include walking tours of both of our Conservation Areas.

Volunteers will deliver tours of one or both of the conservation areas for up to 15 visitors at a time. The tours will have a script which volunteers will receive training to deliver.

This is an exciting and unique way to get involved in the Town Hall Restoration Project – volunteers will get the opportunity to receive excellent training and maybe learn a few things about our lovely town and conservation areas!

This is a volunteer role and is a value-added role. The duties of this role would not be carried out by staff were a volunteer not to be recruited.

Hours

We would like volunteers to deliver at least two tours over the period of the two day festival. There will be two of each tour per day (with a chance this might increase if interest is high!). The festival is taking place on the 8th and 9th September 2017. Volunteers will also need to attend the training day on 25th August – 9.30am-3pm.

If recruited, you are under no obligation to volunteer for us even where it’s anticipated that the volunteering opportunity might be extended across a certain period. We are flexible and adaptable to your availability, and if you wish to not attend a volunteering shift or wish to terminate your volunteering placement with the town hall, then all we require is some verbal notice.

Duties include:

·  Delivering pre-written tours of the town to visitors for the Heritage Open Day Festival (8th/9th September)

·  Attending training for the role on 25th August 9.30am-3pm

·  Undertaking general event volunteering in between tours at the Old Fire Station

Training

·  Induction and Health Safety

·  Tour Guide Training delivered by Sector-Leading training providers

Candidate Specification

·  Communication Skills

·  Physically able to complete the tours

·  Interest in history and archived material

Brackley Town Council can reimburse subsistence and travel expenses for volunteers (upon receipt)

Brackley Town Council welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
