Title: The Effect and Comparison between methods of weight loss

onadipokines and osteocalcin in obese patients

Name: Mohammed Albadah

King khalid university hospital ,Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Objectives:

  • Aim of this study is to determine the effect of weight loss in response to diet and life style modifications on the circulating levels of adipokines and osteocalcin.
  • Analyze differences in biochemical markers before and after weight reduction.

Biochemical profiling: Lipid profile, LFT, CRP and Vit D levels, adipokines, and osteocalcin

Methods

A total of 57 adult obese patients (20-50 years of age, mean age 32.3 ± 8.7 years, BMI ›30) attending nutrition clinics at King Khalid university hospital , Riyadh were followed for four months. A food frequency questionnaire was filled up, their medical history and anthropometric measurements recorded and blood was drawn. Biochemical analyses were done by immunoassays using commercially available kits. Statistical Analyses: All analyses were performed using SPSS software, version 20

Result :

Subjects had lost significant weight with the dietary intervention (BMI 39.72 ± 7.58 pre-intervention vs. 37.83 ± 7.61 kg/m2 post-intervention, P=0.000). There was significant reduction following weight loss in waist circumference, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, HOMA-IR, bone specific alkaline phosphatase, and serum resistin levels. On the other hand, serum adiponectin levels had increased significantly following weight loss. There was no significant changes in the levels of CRP, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, vitamin D, total, carboxylated, and undercarboxylatedosteocalcin, and undercarboxylated to total osteocalcin ratio.

Conclusion

  • Weight loss causes a significant increase in osteocalcin levels and decrease in adipokine levels and other hormonal changes.
  • Combination of diet and exercise has a greater impact on weight reduction compared to either one alone

Further studies are needed with inclusion of women.
