TITLE: Policy on Student Health, Safety and Security

  1. OBJECTIVE:

To allow students to learn and study in an environment that is not harmful to their health and well-being.

The policy on Health, Safety and Security is based on the following elements viz:

Premises and house keeping

Electrical and Personal safeguarding

Management of fire and other security risks

Organisation Management

  1. PREMISES AND HOUSEKEEPING:
  2. Building and Floors

Building structures must always be in good state of repair e.g. windows, floors, doors, carpets, etc.

Building structures must at all times be in a clean and tidy condition.

2.2.Lighting: Natural and Artificial

There should always be enough light so students can see clearly at alltimes. This must be applied equally to cloudy weather conditions.

Lights should not shine directly into the student’s eyes.

Bulbs must be replaced when they are out of order.

Emergency lightning should be available and maintained to take care ofthose times when there is power failure or an emergency which makes it necessary to turn the main power supply.

2.3.Ventilation: Natural and Artificial

It is important that there is enough fresh air in the classroom/workshop.

There should be free air flow.

The temperature should not be too high or too low.

2.4.Sanitation and College hygiene amenities

There should be enough student toilets that are cleaned regularly and properly. It is the responsibility of the student to leave the toilet in the neat and tidy condition he/she found it.

Students’ cafeteria should also be cleaned regularly and properly to repel flies, cockroaches and rats.

She bins to be available.

2.5.Scrap and refuse container removal system

There must be enough bins.

Bins must be emptied at regular basis.

Hazardous waste from workshops should be stored separately.

2.6.Notices and Signs

Symbolic signs indicating aspects such as emergency exits, fire extinguishers, hosepipes etc will be used and be put in strategic places.

  1. ELECTRICAL AND PERSONAL SAFEGUARDING:
  2. No unauthorized tampering with any of electrical system.
  3. No circuit breakers will be breached.
  4. Energy demand is to be compatible to supply. No overloading of circuits.
  5. The safety committee on campus will, once a month, carry out routine checks on the following:

Broken switches

Loose connections

Bad joints

Unusual noise

Sparks or flashes

3.5.Students have the following responsibilities in order to ensure their health and safety:

To report any problems to the health and safety committee.

To use all health and safety equipments correctly at all times.

To refrain from playing with safety equipments such as fire extinguishers

To follow up on any items or issues which remain a problem.

  1. FIRE PREVENTION AND PROTECTION:
  2. The objective of fire prevention and protection programme is to preserve and protect life, property and equipment.
  3. All lecture rooms and workshops will be equipped with fire extinguishers.
  4. Fire emergency equipments will be accessible and visible.
  5. Emergency exits will also be clearly visible in the event of fire; the lecturer will assist in the evacuation of students.
  1. ORGANISATIONAL MANAGEMENT
  2. Each and every campus will have a safety committee whose members must comprise of two SRC members. The safety committee will be tasked with the following:

Compiling bi-annual health and safety reports.

Identifying training needs on safety and security matters.

Communicating with students through notice boards, or any other relevant way about matters affecting their health and safety.

Administering first aid to students who might have come to harms way.

Seeing to it that there are first aid kits in workshops and first aid room.
