6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE STUDY

6.1 NEED FOR THE STUDY:

Dadhi is the Vikruti of Ksheera, which is commonly used in day to day dietary habit, because of its quality of enhancing the taste of food. Dadhi by its nature is having Amla Rasa & Vipaka, Guru Guna, Ushna Veerya & is Abhishyanda Karaka. When it is used properly it is Pathya in conditions like Aruchi, Vishama jvara, Peenasa, Mootrakruchra. It acts as Vatahara, Grahi & increases Bala, Kapha & Meda.1

InYogaratnakara Dadhi is considered best in disorders like Atisara, Aruchi & Karshya if administered during afternoon. Improper usage of Dadhi causes disease like Jvara, Kusta,Visarpa, Pandu, Kamala Rraktapitta and Brama.

The rules for consumption of Dadhi are that it should not be taken at night2, should not be heated, should not be consumed mixing with hot substances, not be consumed during Vasanta, Greeshma & Sharad rutu, & Dadhi should not be consumed continuously for long time.

These rules are important while consuming the curd, but the people who do not know these facts may suffer from different ailments. If persons want to consume in night, it should be taken by mixing either with Mudga Supa, Madhu, Ghrita, Sithopala, or with Amalaka churna1.

Amalaki is Nitya Sevana Pathya Dravya and can be taken before, after & with food, so in this present study Amalaki is selected as adjuvant.

There is no extensive research to show that curd taken at night may be detrimental to ones health. Therefore this study is planned to evaluate whether Dadhi taken not following the rules leads to adverse effects and if taken with Amalaki then illeffect Caused by it can be reversed.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Dadhi should not be consumed in following condition i.e. night time, without mixing with Honey, Suger, Amalaki, Ghrita or Mudga Yusha and also after heating, otherwise it leads to disease like Jvara,Visarpa, Kusta, Pandu, Kamala & Brama. 1

One among the Sadvrutta is – one should not take curd at night. 2 Gorasa varga (Group of milk and its products).3 Ksheera varga explaination of 8 Ksheera Guna & Karma.4 Dadhi & Takra Varga explaination of 8 types of Dadhi Guna & Karma.5 Group of milk and milk products, includes qualities of Dadhi, prohibiting the use of Dadhi & qualities of Takra Ghrita.6

Infact consumption of dairy products at night tends to promote peaceful sleep. However if the person is already suffering from medical disorders such as Asthma, Pneumonia, Bronchitis,Allergies, Cystic Fibrosis etc, then consumption of large quantities of dairy products like yogurt should be avoided as it promotes the production of secretions and mucous which may further aggravate the disorder.

The Lactic acid bacteria in the curd are known to stimulate the Immune Functions of the body. Various research studies have shown that intake of curd bacteria has led to Increase in Immunity parameters such as IgA that have resulted in faster recovery of diseases such as diarrhea.8

In India, it is popularly believed that curd should be avoided during Cough and Cold especially for young children. In a study conducted in Vadodara city, cultural differences were noted in the choice for curd intake during illnesses like Cold and Cough, Injuries, Acidity, Asthama and Lactose Intolerance.8
