  1. Welcome/Introductions/Explanation of tonight (Pickett)
  2. We are here tonight to help parents have a better understanding of the standards taught and the curriculum used in the classroom. We will look at the specific grade level assessments given and what your child needs to know to be successful in the current grade and to move to the next grade.

  2. Where to find them?

 Gray Elementary Web Page: Click on teacher tab, click on your grade level, click on curriculum tab, click on desired information.

 Jones County District Web Page: Click on tab: District, then click on Departments, then click on Curriculum and Instructions, (You have 2 options here.) Either under Quick Links: click on Common Core Georgia Performance Standards, then choose CCGPS ELA/Math tab, then choose English Language Arts or Math, click K-5, then grade level, or under JCSS Curriculum Documents: click on 2014-2015 K-5 Curriculum Documents, then choose your grade levels pacing guides or curriculum maps.

  • What you need to know about them.
  • Show how to get to the 4th grade website and explain how to navigate around the site. (Bivins). Curriculum Used – all information currently being taught can be found on the 4th grade website under “How Can Standards”.
  • Reading/ELA – (Colter) – describe how reading is used across the curriculum and multiple grades are given on assignments. Show tradebooks that are used with Science/Social Studies.

 Close reading strategies are being taught in small group settings

 An increased number of non-fiction passages used daily

 Stress the importance of making connections (text to self, text to world, self to world)

  • Math – (Bivins) – describe and show series of GO Math. Explain how there are different ways to solve math problems and students are shown multiple ways so that they can find a way that is successful to them. We also pull in other resources to teach math. Manipulatives, trade books, etc. are used as well.

  • Social Studies/Science – (Pickett) – (Discuss units to be taught) .Explain that at the beginning of each unit, students are given a study guide. The study guide needs to be studied each night. Have the student read the study guide aloud at night so that on the test, the words are familiar to him/her.

 Units of Study

  • Social Studies- timeline of events (Native Americans, Explorers, 13 Colonies, American Revolution, Government, Westward Expansion)
  • Science- Solar system, light in color, sound, ecosystem, weather and water cycle, simple machines

 Study Guides

  • Available on website (with answers)
  1. State and Local Tests (list grade level tests with brief description) (Colter)
  2. Grade level/unit tests – unit tests are given for Math, Social Studies, and Science. The tests dates are posted on the website.
  3. Benchmarks – midterm (December)
  4. Writing – students are required to write daily across the curriculum and multiple grades are given for assignments.
  5. Georgia Milestones- open ended questions, more info. to come
  1. In order for success, students need to make sure that they study their study guides, participate in classroom discussions, and give 110% each day. (Pickett)
  1. Ways to help your child (useful websites) – (sites are listed on website under heading of “Useful Websites” (Pickett)
  2. Monitoring child’s progress and working with educators to improve the child’s achievements. (Review & correct signed papers)
