Job Description

TITLE:Head Coach

QUALIFICATIONS:Allergic Reaction, Hepatitis, Anabolic Steriods and Concussion Training required

First Aid Certification required

Coaches certification training preferred

Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program

Previous successful playing/coaching experience in assigned sport

Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and ability to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field

Valid Oregon Teaching License recommended

Employed as a teacher with McMinnville School District preferred

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the assigned by the supervisor

REPORTS TO:Athletics Administrator / Principal

I. PROFESSIONAL & PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  1. Submits participant lists, equipment needs, program information and other designated information prior to season.
  2. Follows policy in the athletic handbook and meets all criteria as outlined in job description.
  3. Develops rapport with and demonstrates effective management of the coaching staff.
  4. Is appropriately dressed at the practice and games.
  5. Participates in inservice meetings and other activities to improve coaching performance.
  6. Attends meetings of the athletic department.
  7. Develops sound public relations. Cooperates with newspapers, radio, television, booster club and interested spectators.
  8. Understands and follows rules and regulations set forth by all governing agencies: state association, school district and league.
  9. Participates in parent’s nights, banquets, award nights, pep assemblies and letters to colleges regarding players.
  10. Maintains appropriate sideline conduct at games with respect to players, officials and other workers.
  11. Develops rapport with other teachers, coaches, administrators and support staff.
  12. Works cooperatively with middle school coaches in developing a coordinated program.
  13. Promotes all sports in the athletic program attempting to foster school spirit.
  14. Cooperates and communicates with parents during the entire year.
  15. Works cooperatively with the athletics administrator.
  16. Helps students and parents see the relationship between athletics and character development:

a. Promotes the concept of individual excellence

b. Promotes the importance of teamwork

c. Insists on good sportsmanship

d. Promotes academic achievement

II. COACHING PERFORMANCE:

  1. Provides training rules to team members in writing and follows due process procedures.
  2. Develops respect by example in appearance, manners, behavior, language and conduct during a contest.
  3. Provides proper supervision and administration of locker and training room and on bus trips.
  4. Is well versed and knowledgeable in matters pertaining to the sport.
  5. Maintains individual and team discipline and control.
  6. Develops a well-organized practice schedule which utilizes his/her staff and team to its maximum potential.
  7. Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by the staff.
  8. Holds periodic staff meetings, including middle school coaches to implement the above.
  9. Develops integrity within the coaching staff, fellow coaches and works to make better coaches.
  10. Demonstrates fairness, understanding, tolerance, sympathy and patience with team members.
  11. Uses new coaching techniques and ideas in addition to sound, already proven methods of coaching.
  12. Arrives at practices and games on time.
  13. Shows an interest in athletes in off-season activities and classroom efforts.
  14. Provides leadership and attitudes that produce positive efforts by participants.
  15. Knows the medical aspects of the position, first aid and injury policies. Works with trainer and/or family physician.
  16. Stresses conditioning, physical fitness and injury prevention.
  17. Provides an atmosphere of cooperation;is receptive to suggestions and givescredit to those responsible for success.
  18. Uses ethical means of motivation and emphasizes values of competitive athletics, acceptable personal behavior and decision-making.
  19. Utilizes practice time for both individual and team development.
  20. Develops team performance consistent with quality of athletes available.

III. RELATED COACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Cares for equipment, including issue, collection, inventory and storage.
  2. Is cooperative in developing non-league schedules and securing officials.
  3. Is cooperative in sharing facilities and working with maintenance personnel.
  4. Shows self-control and poise in areas related to coaching responsibilities.
  5. Displays enthusiasm and exhibits interest in coaching.
  6. Keeps athletics administrator informed about events.
  7. Is cooperative in helping service clubs, booster club, recreation department and other organizations in their projects which in turn relate to the athletic program.
  8. Encourages all potential athletes to participate in sport programs.
  9. Follows proper procedure for purchase of equipment.
  10. Operates sport within the budget.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Employee may stand/walk 4-6 hours; drive 1-4 hours. Employee may use hands for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation, and pushing/ pulling 100 pounds maximum. May bend, squat, lift and climb stairs occasionally.
