I stayed with my beautiful host family. At first it was hard to leave my Japanese family but I always spent time with my host family at home. They are now my second family. (Leave the laugh in at the end)

Whether they’re Japanese students or they’re Australian students, they’re still students, they’re young people and they’re still able to learn, and they listen to each other and they understand that they’re just people. And given the opportunity, people can come together in real friendship and in real love and I think that’s been evidenced in our program.

Christian College Geelong spans years K to twelve and takes pride in its rich Asian language program.
Naga Senior High School, is located in Iwade City in Wakayama Prefecture Japan. All students undertake English language learning.
The sister school relationship began in 1993. Since then many hundreds of students from both schools have benefitted from the exchange program.
Our program is about language, cultural understanding and friendships.

Some students have gone back to Australia again as exchange university students. I think that those students have possessed the ideas of studying and working worldwide. In the past it was rare to see people from overseas in Iwade, but through the exchange program we see people from CCG and many other countries all the time. It is no longer an unusual thing. There are many wonderful benefits both programs for students from Christian College and Naga High School, and I sincerely believe that long-term and short-term exchange is an opportunity that students will never forget and provides them with many lifelong skills.

We have wonderful three different exchange programs such as three-week short stay study tour and a five month long term exchange and assistant program. That experience shows the benefit for the students – improving their language skills and their cultural understanding and developing friendships.

One of the more recent benefits of the program has been us having the dialogue and the opportunity to share on an educational level about pedagogy and resources and approaches to the whole educational journey together and each of our schools are able to benefit from….(finishes early)

Both of my children have been to Japan and have studied Japanese We’ve hosted Japanese students and Japanese teachers in our own home and we’ve made wonderful friendships out of those experiences.

We now have students who live in Japan, who’ve married Japanese people, they’ve really encompassed the whole idea of our cultural exchange.

With the way it’s been established at the college, it’s part of the fabric of Christian College and I have no doubt it will continue.
