TITLE:Children’s Café Assistant(Internship x2)

RESPONSIBLE TO:House Manager

Z-arts has a busy theatre, gallery, cafe and rooms throughout the building that we use for our own activities and that are hired out for a rich variety of events and meetings.

Dedicated to inspiring creativity, Z-arts delivers a broad range of visual and performing arts events, performances, exhibitions, activities, workshops and participatory opportunities. One of the most versatile cultural buildings in Greater Manchester, Z-arts has an excellent track record in engaging young people of all ages in creative participatory activities and a new ambition to become Manchester’s primary venue for children and families.

Our Café area is an important part of the building, where we provide a warm welcome to visitors and audiences to the building. It is a lively space where families with children and young people can buy food and drink and there is a small children’s play space.

This paid internship has been created as part of the Creative Employment Programme. The Creative Employment Programme is an Arts Council England fund to support the creation of traineeships, formal apprenticeship and paid internship opportunities in England for unemployed young people wishing to pursue a career in the arts and cultural sector. There are certain criteria you must meet in order to be eligible to apply for a Creative Employment Programme funded internship. At the time of applying you must be aged 18 to 24 years old and you must be registered as unemployed with Jobcentre Plus.

HOURS : 6 Month contract35 hours per week.

SALARY : National Minimum Wage or above

PURPOSE: To work as part of the team running the Z-arts Café/Bar. Usual opening hours are 09:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday and 10:00 to 16:00 Saturdays plus the Bar is open on evenings during events.

MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

1)Preparation and Serviceof food and drink to customers in a polite, friendly helpful manner

2)Maintaining café stock level of ingredients and preparing lists for re-ordering of stock

3)Keeping café area clean and tidy, clearing away used dishes & cutlery from tables when customers are finished and preparing the tables ready for the next customers.

4)To help develop the café’s offer for children including developing a Kids menu and making the café area into a friendly and welcoming space for children and families

5)Operation of an electronic cash register

6)Assisting in Monthly stock take procedures

7)Keep up-to-date with Z-arts programme of work, box office and building information etc, so as to effectively advise customers.

8)Take part in any extra training as required, and take a proactive approach in remaining aware of Café Bar Policies.

9)Keep the bar and kitchen areas clean and tidy at all times, clearing the floor of any rubbish as and when needed.

10)Maintain high standard of cleanliness on café equipment; coffee machines, ice machine & glass washer

11)To undertake any other duties as required by the House manager or the Senior Management team.

12) Assist in the maintenance of all-necessary fire and Health and Safety Regulations and to take emergency action as required in the event of an evacuation or similar event within the building.

13)To work with the entire staff team to support and deliver Z-arts strategic and creative vision.

14)To understand, actively promote and adhere to Health & Safety legislation.

15)To adhere to all Z-arts policies and procedures.

General information:

To comply with legislation covering the activities at Z-arts, it is required that all staff undertakes training as directed by their line manager. It is also essential that all staff carry out their duties in a safe manner in accordance with the current Health and Safety at Work legislation.

Person Specification

We are particularly keen to encourage young applicants at the start of their career with an interest in developing their skills and experience in catering.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

1)Ability to learn how to prepare and serve a range of simple snacks and sandwiches

2)Ability to use a fresh coffee machine to serve cappuccino and lattes (training will be given if necessary)

3)A friendly and welcoming demeanour

4)Ability to work effectively under pressure and deal with conflicting demands.

5)Ability to demonstrate strong communication skills.

6)Ability to work well in diverse team and cooperate with others.

7)Excellent time keeping skills, conscientious and punctual.

8)Excellent standard of personal presentation and hygiene.
