Song

Title: “ Because you loved me” Singer: Celine Dion

Level: Intermediate Class: A ( Eniaio Lykeio Thermis )

Teaching aims:

To make students come in contact with authentic material and develop listening skills for specific information. ( Listening )

To practise and revise the Simple Past Tense of Regular/Irregular Verbs. ( Writing )

To make students read and fill in gaps. ( Reading )

To make students speak about their feelings and the speaker’s feelings. (Speaking)

To enrich vocabulary

To make students write a short paragraph. ( Writing )

Teaching aids: Board, photocopy, cassette, tape recorder and photos or a poster of the

singer.

Time: 45 minutes

Teaching Procedure

Warm-up:

  1. Students listen to the song and try to guess who the singer is.

Thenthe teacher gives some background information about this song.

(It is a song by a French-Canadian singer and appears on the album Falling into you. It featured

in the film Up Close and Personal starring Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer).

2. The teacher asks the students the following questions about the setting of the

song and the speaker’s feelings.

Questions: Where is she?

What is she doing?

What is she thinking about?

How does she feel?

Activities:

  1. Students are given the photocopy with the lyrics and fill in the blanks with the

Simple Past Tense of the verbs given.

  1. Then they listen to the song and check their answers.(NOTE:The teacher writes the correct answers on the board).
  2. Then they talk about the sentiments behind the song and what the lyrics suggest.

They write the correct answer in the space provided on the photocopy with the help of the teacher.

Possible answer: (The lyrics suggest that the speaker has been through some very difficult times, both physically and emotionally.She/he is acknowledging the love

and support that was given to her/him during these times and how she/he was able to come through it because of that other person).

  1. Students make a list of what they should expect from someone who loves them.

Possible answer: (love, faith, respect, patience, affection, sincerity, sensitivity, tenderness etc.)

At this point, the teacher asks if their list includes things like money? Why/Why not? The teacher discuss it with the students and he/she may write on the board the English proverb: Money does not bring happiness as a prompt for discussion.

Further practice:

  1. Students are given a True/False exercise about Celine Dion’s life to answer.
  2. According to their answers, they write a short biography note (of 60-80 words) about her life.

Note: If there isn’t any time left, the last exercise can be given as homework.
