Time ripe to look beyond mobile manufacturing: IT Secretary Ajay Prakash Sawhney at C-ESDM Forum

Mr Ajay Prakash Sawhney, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MEITY), has called upon the electronics and telecom industry to seize the huge opportunity prevalent in electronics manufacturing space within the country.

“We are entering into an era of rapid growth of disruptive and exciting technologies which do not exist at present. Companies making mobile phones should look beyond just making handsets,” said Mr Sawhney while speaking at a brainstorming conference titled “Inflexion point in Mobile Phone Manufacturing – PCB Population from 2018 – Are we ready?”, organized by the Centre for Development of Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (C-ESDM) recently in national capital.

C-ESDM, a body supported by Indian Cellular Association, has been established to nurture and speed up national eco-system for building electronic design and manufacturing industry in India. Addressing the distinguished gathering, the National President of Indian Cellular Association Pankaj Mohindroo pointed out that Indian manufacturers needed to look beyond opportunities in domestic markets. “Besides manufacturing for India market, we will also need to look at exporting devices if we have to meet target of 500 million mobile devices manufacturing in India by 2019,” Mr Mohindroo said.

Elaborating on the role of C-ESDM, Mr Mohindroo said that the body is a think tank which will also undertake targeted investment promotion in select ESDM countries like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China and USA and provide investment facilitation services to promote the electronics manufacturing industry and its’s eco system.

C-ESDM shall be organizing a series of workshops on the industry verticals such as: Mechanics, Key pads, Camera module, Connectors, Heat Dissipating materials, Touch Panel/ Cover assembly among others. The establishment has on board a pool of renowned experts both from the Corporate and Government sector having deep expertise in the electronics manufacturing space.

Dr. Ajay Kumar, Add Sec and Mr Sanjay Rakesh, Joint Secretary ,Ministry of Electronics and IT, blessed the event with their active participation. from - Some of the industry stalwarts who participated at the event included: Mr Hari Om Rai, Cofounder and Director Lava International Ltd; Mr A Gururaj, MD –Wistron; and many other distinguished people; Mr Soni Saran Singh, Executive Director, iNETest Technologies India PVt Ltd, which had also supported the event.
