Overview of the Week:
Weare continuing to have a great start to the school year in 1-H! We are enjoying getting to know each other through lessons, games, and activities. We have gotten to know a few “Kings” or “Queens” during the interviews and are looking forward to learning about the rest of our classmates.
In Language Arts, we will continue reviewing our letters and corresponding sounds using our Alpha friends. It is very important that the students know all of the letters and sounds, as they continue to develop their reading and writing skills. This week we will begin to sort pictures based on their beginning sounds. We will also continue with our first author study: Eric Carle. We have enjoyed reading several of his books including The Foolish Tortoise, The Grouchy Ladybug, and The Very Busy Spider ! This week during Reader’s Workshop, the students learn how to find good reading spots and identify what reading independently looks like and sounds like. Also, during read alouds, we will practice making predictions and inferences.
In writing this week, the students will write in their journals. We will write in our journals weekly and have Writer’s Workshop the remaining days. Also, during writing time we will review and practice how to correctly make all the letters of the alphabet. This week we will work on our pencil grip and various lines that make up letters.
In ourfirst math unit, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, we will solve adding to and putting together situations using the strategy make a model. The students will understand and apply the Additive Identity Property for Addition (adding zero to a number) as well as the Commutative Property for Addition (turn around facts) At the end of the week, we will model and record all the ways to put together numbers within ten. The following terms have or will be introduced: sum, addition sentences, addends.
As part of the school wide initiative in character education, we will continue to spend time discussing what “being nice” looks like and what “being mean” looks like. We will talk about why it is important to always treat people with kindness and respect. These ideas will continue to be reinforced throughout the year. Also, Mrs. Inzano, our school counselor, came into our classroomtoday to read a story and discuss how friends should treat one another. She taught the students about “I” messages and how to tell someone how we are feeling in a polite and assertive way.
Again, I am looking forward to a wonderful year with you and your child. Please feel free to contact me at any time via email at or a note in your child’s backpack.
