Three options for future of Tamworth Golf Course

A decision on the future of Tamworth Golf Course will be made by members of Tamworth Borough Council’s Cabinet on Tuesday night (March 26).

Members will make their decision after considering three options for the future of the course –which closed last month after the company which ran it, Tamworth Golf Centre Ltd, ceased trading.

The three options to be considered are:

  • Closing the golf course and considering the longer-term sustainability options for the site
  • Re-opening the golf course, run by Tamworth Borough Council, for an interim period.
  • Appointing an interim management company to operate the golf course for a period of 12 months.

If the second or third option is chosen on Tuesday, work will begin to look at other ways of managing the longer-term future of the golf course site. This will include future redevelopment and investment options, which will be considered in discussions with the Golf Club Committee.

The Council remains committed to the development of a driving range as part of the longer-term options for the future.

The course is owned by Tamworth Borough Council and had been leased to Tamworth Golf Centre Ltd since 2006. The leasing of the course resulted in savings for the Council and generated income through rental payments.

The Council has had meetings with members of the golf club and staff from the course to look at options for the future. A creditors’ meeting was held on Thursday March 21, following which the Liquidator will now finalise the winding-up of the company.

Cllr Steve Claymore, Cabinet member for Economic Development, said: “These three options for the future of the Tamworth golf course have been developed to minimise the cost to the taxpayers of the borough.

“When considering which of these three options to select on Tuesday night, members will need to review all the implications and which of the options makes the best use of public funds.

“We have listened to public opinion and the views we have received from residents and golfers will be taken into account.”
