Proceedings of the training on ' Soil & water conservation for front line staff & other beneficiaries ' held on 18-20 October 2011 at Centre for Forestry Research & Human Resource Development,Chhindwara a satellite centre of Tropical Forest Research Institute, Jabalpur

Under the Sustainable Land & Ecosystem Management (SLEM) – Country Partnership Programme (CPP)- a training programme has been organized on the subject “Soil & Water Conservation for front line staff of forest department & other beneficiaries"(Ek`nk ,oa ty ds laj{k.k gsrq ou foHkkx ds eSnkuh veys ,oa fgxzkfg;ksa gsrq izf’k{k.k) from 18-20 October-2011at Centre for Forestry Research & Human Resource Development,Chhindwara (CFRHRD) under the guidance of Director,Tropical Forest Research Institute (TFRI), Jabalpur and APCCF Project Director(UNDP-GEF) MP Forest Department and financial support from Indian Council of Forestry Research & Education (ICFRE-TFO), Dehradun.

In this training programme 89 trainees of front line staff of forest department (forest rangers, deputy rangers, forest guards of state forest department Madhya Pradesh ) & 9 field farmers from 9 milli water shade areas of the district Betul, Singraully, Sidhi, Umaria & Chhindwara participated in training programme. This training programme accommodated lectures and field visits.

The programme was presided over by Dr. M.S. Negi, Director, TFRI,Jabalpur with chief guest Dr. M.S. Rana, Addl. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Project Director, UNDP-GEF, M.P ; Shri Chittranjan Tyagi, CF (WP), Sri R.K. Pathak, CF, Umaria; Dr. S. K. Sharma , Project Manager SLM-CPP , ICFRE, Dehradun; Miss Liachwii, Project Officer, UNDP and DFO of East Division Shri Ashok Kumar, Shri L.P. Tiwari DFO, South Chhindwara; Shri Bhardwaj, DFO Betul, Dr. Reddy, Dy.Director ,Regional Agriculture Research Centre, Chhindwara, Scientists from TFRI and JNKVV, Jabalpur were also present.Programme was coordinated by Dr. Suneesh Buxy, IFS, Head of Office, CFRHRD, Chhindwara

INAUGURAL SESSION

At the outset Dr. Suneesh Buxy, IFS, Head of Office, CFRHRD, Chhindwara welcomed the guest and the trainees and introduced the theme of the meeting. This was followed by lightening the lamp by Dr. M. S. Negi, Director, Tropical Forest research Institute, Jabalpur and Dr. M.S. Rana Adl.PCCF Project Director UNDP- GEF, Madhya Pradesh ; Mr. Sumit Burman, UNDP Coordinator, Bhopal; Shri R.K. Pathak, CF, Umariya; Miss Lianchwii, Programme Officer UNDP, New Delhi.

Dr. P. K. Khatri, Nodal Officer SLEM, TFRIgave a brief about the trainingprogramme and the training details. It was followed by general introduction and address to the participants by Director TFRI, Dr. M.S. Negi.

Dr. M.S. Negi in the presidential speech informed that many activities related to SLEM project is already going in TFRI, Jabalpur under different Research Projects. He also stated that involvement of communities will be fruitful in the area of soil and water conservation for sustainable land & ecosystem managementand requested the trainees to take active participation in the discussions. Miss Lianchwii, Project coordinator, UNDP stated the activities of UNDP under CPP programme. Her observations were further elaborated by Shri Bhardwaj, DFO, Betul in hindi. Chif Guest Dr. M.S. Rana in his address explained the genesis of SLEM, its functioning & activities in India, with special reference to M.P. & the implementing Districts. He also told that many livelihood opportunities may come up in this project which will decrease the biotic pressure over forest areas. He stated that a symbiotic relationship has been observed between the local people living in & around the forest with NWFPs, e.g. Bamboo, Medicinal Plants, Mahua etc. for sustainable management. Vote of thanks has been offered by Dr. V. Nath, GC(R), TFRI, Jabalpur.

Technical Session – I: Presentation by resource persons

In the technical sessionsI on 18th October 2011, Proff. Dr. R.K. Nema, College of Agriculture Engineering JNKVV Jabalpur in his lecture "Control Measures for Prevention of Soil Erosion" described the basic concept and types of soil erosion and their control measures.

Proff. Dr. M.K. Hardaha,Directorate of Extension, JNKVV, Jabalpur focused on Practical Applicability of Engineering Structure and Water Conservation, physical, chemical and biological properties including available water storage capacity. He described the reasons of soil and water conservation and ways to control and manage the same in benefits of local people.

Shri Chittaranjan Tyagi gev a presentation on community involvement, afforestation of suitable species and Grassland Rehabilitation by Silvi-pasture Development and eco-friendly Soil Conservation Measures through plantation activities.

Shri R. N. Shrivastava, Professor, JNKVV, Jabalpur delivered a lecture on Water Governance & Stressed upon various means of Water conservation strategies.

Technical session-II-Presentation by resource persons

Technical session has been started at 11.45hrs by Shri K. K. Bhardwaj, DFO, South Betul. He shared his ground level experience about small and middle scale enterprises. He emphasize need on identification of forest based product & local product under small & medium scale enterprises.

Technical Session III- Presentation by resource persons

Shri R.K. Pathak, CF, Umariya delivered lecture on “Restoration of Degraded Bamboo Forest” related activities going on in Umariya forest.

Shri L.P. Tiwari, DFO south, Chhindwara gave presentation on Integrated Land & Ecosystem Management to combat Land degradation & deforestation in M.P. with emphasis on the work done in Ambada Range, south Chhindwara (T) division.

Dr. Suneesh Buxy gave emphasis on the opportunity in Tamia & Patalkot by ecotourism as good practice. He also delivered a lecture on soil conservation measures in field forestry.

Briefing and group formation for field visit was done by Shri Ashok Kumar, DFO east, Chhindwara. He also allotted four topics to trainees for Brainstorming session held on 20/10/2011. The topics were:

  1. Control measure for restoration of degraded Bamboo forest.
  2. Need of energy plantation and grassland development.
  3. Conservation, cultivation, processing and marketing of medicinal plants.
  4. Management of soil & water conservation

Field visits:

Full day field visit on 19.10.11 was conducted at Tamia and Borpani. One group comparing of 50 trainees and beneficiaries visited Tamia. In Tamia they got acquainted with lac cultivation, conservation of soil erosion, rehabilitation of bamboo forest.

Another group comprises 39 trainees and beneficiaries visited Borpani where they seen medicinal plantation, management of degraded bamboo forest, methods of irrigation without electricity, conservation of soil erosion, making of rope etc.

This visit fallowed by discussion with beneficiaries in the field. Beneficiaries told about benefits through these projects. Trainees were also observed the work done for Control measure for restoration of degraded Bamboo forest at Kuabadla.

Technical Session IV

Field visit was organized to Jamunia medicinal plant nursery was under taken on 20/10/2011. Information regarding Cultivation, processing and marketing of medicinal plants was given to trainees.

Panel discussion and brainstorming session

Panel discussion and brain storming session on different aspects of field visit was coordinated by Shri Chiteranjan Tyagi, CF and Smt Rakhi Nanda, DFO. Other panelists were Shri L.P. Tiwari, Dr. Suneesh Buxy and Shri Ashok Kumar. Dr. S. K. Sharma Project Manager ICFRE briefs the activities of SLEM and interacts with the trainees.Presentation made by different group on previous allotted subjects was done. The Three day programme was concluded by distribution of certificates at 4.30 pm by Shri Chittranjan Tyagi, IFS, Conservator of Forests, Chhindwara.

Trainees were fully satisfied with the training programme but they suggested that such type of training programme should be more pictorial and organized infield and on site in future

The training was ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. S. Buxy, Head of Office, CFRHRD, Chhindwara, Co-ordinator of this programme.
