Job Description and Person Specification for the role of:

Nursery Nurse

Grade: Surrey Grade S6

Reports to: Class Teacher/Senior Leaders

1. / JOB PURPOSE
To work alongside, and under the direction of teaching staff in implementing the aims and policies of the school and the Foundation Stage curriculum, through planning, preparing and supervising structured and free play learning activities, and to provide a secure, healthy and stimulating environment in which young children will be supported and encouraged in developing their independence as well as social and general learning skills.
2. / PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • To be the Lead Practitioner within the two year old area, taking responsibility for the planning, assessment, environment, children and staff related to this age group. The role of the lead practitioner is to work alongside colleagues under the direction of the Nursery Teacher and Senior Leaders, to guide and advise on practice, ensuring the best possible progress for all children.
  • To work within and maintain the context of the whole Nursery and Early Years team.
  • To ensure all daily routines are adhered to and records kept up to date.
  • To plan and carry out activities in line with the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.
  • To ensure assessments are regularly completed including the statutory two year old progress check.
  • To proactively and positively engage with parents. Act as a role model for other practitioners in developing and maintaining a partnership with parents that values
their contributions and involves them in their child’s education, including support for the home learning environment and ensuring smooth transitions and continuity for the child and parents into, within and out of the setting.
  • To ensure children get the best start in life by supporting and developing the prime areas of learning which will develop the child’s independence, confidence, self-esteem and resilience.
  • Support staff development and work closely with other staff and professionals to provide the best outcomes for all children.
  • To oversee an effective key worker system.
  • To liaise with the Nursery Teacher and Nursery Admin Assistant to provide a smooth transition for children when settling into the Nursery and when they move into the three and four year old area.
  • To attend and contribute to weekly Early Years meetings.
  • To organise and lead parent/keyworker meetings and parent evenings.
  • Assist the Nursery Teacher and Early Years Leader in the management and leadership of a diverse staff team.
  • Support the establishment of a culture of reflection through continuous review of strengths and areas for development which leads to actions for improvement which impact on quality.
  • Uphold the principles and model good practice in inclusion and equal opportunities in all aspects of the role, supporting early identification and intervention strategies at all times.
  • To develop strong working partnerships with parents, other school staff, governors and external specialists;
  • To ensure good standards of safety, hygiene and cleanliness are maintained at all times and that children’s intimate care is well managed.
  • To take full responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the children, ensuring that all procedures for Child Protection, Health, Safety and Security, Confidentiality and Data Protection are adhered to at all times, and close attention is paid to the physical, emotional, social and welfare needs of all the children.

WORK CONTEXT

  • Supports class teacher / Nursery teacher with their responsibility for the development, education and care of nursery aged pupils contributing to their social and personal development in a caring and secure environment in which curiosity, confidence and enthusiasm can be fostered.
  • Direction/supervision received from class teacher / Nursery teacher
  • Co-operates and works with other adults in team situations. Needs to be sensitive to the needs of individual young children, including the more able and those with special educational needs or with English as a second language. Responds in a reassuring and constructive way, using knowledge and understanding of how children learn and develop.

  • Contact with pupils, class teacher on a daily basis.
  • Able to move around independently and work with pupils inside and outside the classroom.
  • Participates in external school activities.
  • Nursery Nurses will play a significant role in helping young children to make the transition from a home to school environment and to interact successfully with other children and adults.

Education, Training and Work Qualifications
Essential:
NNEB Certificate or equivalent in childcare*
Good standard of general education
* CACHE diploma
* NVQ Level 3 Childcare & Education or equivalent / Desirable:
GCSE / NVQ level 2
in English and Maths
