Thomson ONE Banker adopts Industry Classification Benchmark

Effective immediately, Thomson ONE Banker will utilise the Industrial Classification Benchmark (ICB) codes developed jointly by Dow Jones and FTSE as its primary industry classification scheme. The ICB codes replace the previous Dow Jones Industry Classification codes.

What is the Industry Classification Benchmark

Dow Jones Indexes and FTSE Group merged their industry-classification systems to create a single structure covering equities and corporate bonds worldwide. The new four-level system is known as Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB), and covers 45,000 companies and securities around the world.

The ICB, which is owned equally by both companies, is expected to become an instant global industry standard. The existing Dow Jones Indexes and FTSE systems are already used by the world’s largest stock exchanges, including NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange in the U.S., Euronext, the JSE in South Africa, the London Stock Exchange and SWX Swiss Exchange across Europe and Africa. Other major index providers that use the system include FXI (FTSE/Xinhua) in China, the Hang Seng (HIS) in Hong Kong, the Russell 3000 Index family in the US and STOXX Ltd for its indexes across Europe. Additionally, leading, worldwide media organizations, such as The Financial Times, Sartmoney, and The Wall Street Journal, already use one of the these systems. Current users of the existing classification standards are expected to switch to the new, joint ICB classification.
