Thomas Jefferson High School AP© (Advanced Placement) Contract

You have earned the opportunity to take a more rigorous course that will better prepare you for your post secondary experience. Being enrolled in AP courses is a privilege and subsequently requires that students invest themselves further in their education.

Enrollment

The student shall:

·  Have demonstrated superior achievement in accelerated or other appropriate classes that prepared them to take college-level courses in grades 9,10, 11, and 12.

·  Acquired teacher and counselor recommendations.

·  Agreed to pay a fee for the AP Exam requested, in order to receive Accelerated credit for the class.

Any of the above criteria may be waived at the discretion of the principal, if placement is deemed in the best educational interest of the student.

Course Expectations

At Thomas Jefferson High School, an AP student can expect the following:

·  Summer reading and homework.

·  To purchase additional course materials such as textbooks, novels, and supplementary readings as required.

·  Coursework to include at least one major research paper/project per semester.

·  Coursework to include intensive reading and writing in the content area.

·  Instruction to include the use of higher-order thinking skills.

·  A significant amount of rigorous homework, beyond that of a regular class.

·  Instructional materials selected for use will reflect the challenging nature of the course.

·  Level of instruction that reaches greater depths of understanding, including self-directed learning, and establish higher expectations for the student.

Academic Standards

AP students are expected to produce exceptional, on-time, and original work achieving and maintaining a C grade. Additionally, the following standards apply to all AP students:

·  Cheating and plagiarism will NOT be tolerated and will result in removal from the class

·  Cheating will be defined as:

o  Academic/intellectual dishonesty.

·  Plagiarism will be defined as:

o  The use or imitation of the language and/or thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own work.

·  Late Policy:

o  50% deduction from any late homework.

o  10% daily deduction for small projects and papers.

o  Teachers will not accept any late projects or papers that are designated semester projects or papers.

·  In an instance where a student falls below a C the teacher may require that the student attend additional class time during the Excel Period and/or comparable time with the school tutoring program as arranged by the student and the teacher. Student may also be considered for removal from the class. STUDENTS MAY NOT WITHDRAW AFTER THE END OF THE FIRST SIX WEEKS. A DROP AT SEMESTER IS POSSIBLE, PENDING APPROVAL BY PARENT, TEACHER, AND COUNSELOR!

·  Student must take the AP Exam to receive AP credit.
