HISTORYOFTHEGAME
Thehistoryofbowlingcanbetracedbackatleastseventhou-sandyears.TheancientEgyptiansenjoyedaversionofthegame,asindicatedbybowlingballsandpinsfoundburiedinanEgyptianchild’sgrave.
Bythe1840s,bowlinghadbecomepopularinAmerica.ThefirstindoorbowlinglaneswerebuiltinNewYork.AbrahamLincolnwasamongthemanyfamousAmericanswhoenjoyedbowling.
TheAmericanBowlingConference(ABC)wasfounded
PhysicalEducationLearningPackets / #5Bowling / Text©2011AdvantagePress,Inc.formenin1895.Awomen’sorganization,theWIBA,wasfoundedin1916.Thetwo organizationsnowworktogethertodevelopandenforcetherulesofthegame.ThecombinedmembershipoftheABCandWIBCwasapproximatelytenmillionpeoplein1992.That’salmost4%oftheentirepopulationofAmerica,anditdoesn’tevencountallthoseeverydaybowlerswhodon’tbelongtoaconference,butwhobowloccasion-allyjustforthefunofit.

THEBOWLINGALLEY
Bowlingisdoneinabowling“alley,”or “lane,”asitissometimescalled,whichis62feet10incheslongandabout41incheswide.Theareawherethebowlerstandsiscalledthe “approach area,” andis15feetinlength.
Thefoullineseparatestheapproachareafromthealley.Nine-inch-wideguttersrun alongbothsidesofthealley.Attheotherendofthealley,tenbowlingpinsstand,ar- rangedinatriangularformationasshown ontheright.
Theobjectistoknockdownasmanypinsasyoucaneachtimeyousendtheballdownthealley.Themoreoftenyouknockallofthemdowneachtimeyoubowl,thehigheryourscorewillbe.Eachpinthatisknockeddowncountsasonepoint.
Eachgameisdividedintoten“frames,”duringwhicheachplayerhasachancetoknockdownthepins.Ifyouknockdownallthepinsduringeachframe,youwillscore30pointsperframeand300pointsforthegame.
Foranovicebowler,ascoreor120orsoisconsideredgood.Ascorebetween160and180isgoodforaregularbowler,whileprofessionalsaveragemorethan200pointsinasinglegame.

XThisstands fora strike,which meansthat allthe pinshave beenknockeddowninoneturn.
/Thisstandsforaspare,whichmeansthatallpinshavebeenknockeddown intwoturns.Abowlerisawarded10pointsplusabonusofhescoreonthenextroll.Ifaspareismadeonthefinalframe,oneextrarollispermitted.
OThezeroisusedtoshowasplitball,whichoccurswhentheheadpinisdownandtheremainingpinshaveanotherpindownimmediatelyaheadof orbetweenthem.Rememberthatasplitleavespinsthatarenotcloseto-getherstandinganditisthereforehardertoknockthemdowninonetry.
FThismarkmeansafoul,whichhappenswhenaplayergoesbeyondthefoulline.Ahandorarm,however,mayextendoverthefoullinewithno penalty.Whenafouloccurs,noscoreisrecordedforthatshot.

FOUR-STEPDELIVERY
Thebowlingpinsmaybeapproachedinmanydifferentways,butthemostbasiciscalledthe“four-stepdelivery.”Hereisasummaryofeachstep:
STEPONE:Ifthebowlerisright-handed,heorshe shouldmakethefollowingsevenmovements:
1.Bendforward
2.Movetherightfootforwardabout12inches.
3.Holdtheballforwardandtotheright.
4.Allowthelefthandtoleavetheball.

STEPTHREE:Theballnowreachesthepeakofthebackswing(aboutshoulderheight).Keepthemovementssmoothanddeliberateanddon’trush.
STEPFOUR:Thisstepinvolvestwelvemovements:
1.Pushforwardofftherightfoot.
2.Slideonthefrontoftheleftfoot.
3.Bendtheleftknee.
4.Bendatthewaistandleanforward.
5.Lettheballswingforwardunderitsownmomentum.
6.Keeptherightwristandarmstraight.
7.Keepthethumbpositionedat“11 o’clock”(“1o’clock”forleft-handedpersons).
8.Theleftkneecontinuestobendastheleftfootslidestoastop.
9.Theslideiscompletedafewinchesfromthefoulline.

FOLLOW-THROUGH
Whentheballisreleased,thethumbcomesout
first,followedbytheotherfingers.
Atthispoint,thearmisinaforwardpositionandshouldcontinuetoriseuptoshoulderlevel.Somebowlinginstructorsdon’temphasizethefollow-through,claiminginsteadthatitoccursnaturallyiftheballisthrowncorrectly.Otherinstructorsfeelthatfollow-throughisanimportantifneglectedpartofbowling.Trybothtoseewhichoneworks betterforyou.
FOURBASICSHOTS
Thefourbasicshotsindicatethewayinwhichtheballrollsdownthealley.Thesefour shotsarethe:
straightballhookballcurveballbackupball
Thestraightshotisexactlywhatitsnameimpliesexceptthatitisrolleddownthealleyslightlyoffcenterinordertohitthefirstpinatanadvantageousangle.
Thehookshotconsistentlybeatsothershotsinproducingstrikes.Thehook,ifthrownproperly,willstartachainreactionamongthepins.Thehookingmotionoftheball’s

Thecurveballisdifficulttocontrol.Itisactuallyanexaggeratedversionofthehook shot,butbecauseofthesidepath,thereismoreroomforerrorinthisshot.
Thebackupshotisseldomused.Itworksfromlefttoright,theexactoppositeoftheotherthreeshots.Mostprofessionalplayersadviseagainstusingthistypeofshot.
EQUIPMENTANDCLOTHING
Thetwoessentialpiecesofequipmentneededinbowlingareabowlingballandapairofbowlingshoes.Clothingcanbeanycomfortable,loose-fittingsportswearthatallowsroomforfreemovement.
Weight,spanandpitchmustallbeconsideredinselectingabowlingball.“Span”isthedistancebetweenthethumbholeandthefingerholes.“Pitch”istheangleatwhichthefingerholesaredrilled.Withregardstoweight,theruleofthumbistoselecttheheaviestballthatcanbehandledwithease.Choosingaballthatistooheavyandbecomingfatiguedfromusingitdefeatsthepurposeofthegame.
Agoodproshopcanhelpabeginningbowlerdecidewhereholesshouldbedrilledintheballtoinsureacomfortablefit.
Thechoiceofbowlingshoesdependsuponwhichhandthebowlerusestorolltheball.For example,ifthebowlerisright-handed,theleftshoeneedstoallowslidingwhiletherightshoeprovidesthenecessarytraction.Theoppositeistrueforleft-handedbowlers.
