Materials:

  • 2 balls Elann.com Peruvian Highland Bulky in shade 0500 Black, or about 110 yards of bulky yarn of your choice
  • 16 inch size 10 US (6 mm) circular needle
  • 1 set size 10 US (6 mm) double-pointed needles, or long circular for magic loop
  • Scissors, tape measure, yarn needle

Gauge:

3.5 stitches and 4 rows to 1 inch in Stockinette Stitch in the round.

Size:

Finished hat circumference: 20 inches, which will fit most adults

Knitting the Hat:

  1. Cast on 72 stitches, and join in round, being careful not to twist.
  2. Work in K3, P3 rib for 3 inches
  3. Work in Stockinette Stitch (every row knit) for 5 inches

Shape crown:

Change to double-pointed needles when there are not sufficient stitches to continue work on the circular needle.

  1. Round 1: K4, K2tog around (60 stitches).
  2. Round 2: Knit.
  3. Round 3: K3, K2tog around (48 stitches).
  4. Round 4: Knit.
  5. Round 5: K2, K2tog around (36 stitches).
  6. Round 6: K1, K2tog around (24 stitches).
  7. Round 7: K2tog around (12 stitches).
  8. Thread yarn through remaining 12 stitches and pull tight to close top of crown. Weave in all ends.

Reversible LaceHat

Materials:

  • 2 balls Elann.com Peruvian Highland Bulky in shade 0500 Black, or about 110 yards of bulky yarn of your choice
  • 16 inch size 10 US (6 mm) circular needle

  • 1 ball Elann.com Peruvian Baby Cashmere in shade 0100 Parchment, or about 80 yards of fingering weight yarn of your choice

  • 16 inch size 3 US (3.25 mm) circular needle
  • 1 set size 3 US (3.25 mm) double-pointed needles, or long circular for magic loop
  • Scissors, tape measure, yarn needle

Gauge:

Basic Hat: 3.5 stitches to 1 inch in Stockinette Stitch in the round.

Lace Hat: About 6 stitches to 1 inch in Spider Lace pattern - gauge is not crucial, as lace will stretch to fit the shape of the Basic Hat.

Size:

Finished hat circumference is 20 inches, which will fit most adults

Knit the Hat:

First, make the Basic Hat in bulky yarn.

  1. Turn hat inside out, and on wrong side, using the lace weight yarn and size 3 circular needle, pick up stitches in the purl "bumps" along first round after ribbing. Pick up 3 stitches in every 2 of the bulky, that is, pick up 1 in first stitch (lower bump), pick up 2 in next stitch (lower and adjacent upper bump), pick up 1 in next stitch (lower bump), etc. You will have 108 stitches.

  1. Place marker, and begin working Spider Lace chart or from the instructions below. This is a 6-stitch chart, and is worked 18 times around.

  15. ** On round 12, remove marker, slip first stitch without knitting it, replace marker and work chart as written, starting with the yo. The unworked stitch is worked at the end of the round.

Shaping theCrown

The crown is shaped beginning with a 12-stitch repeat worked repeatedly around the hat. Follow the chart or the instructions below. As you decrease stitches, change to double-pointed needles when necessary to comfortably finish shaping the crown.

Round 1: k12

Round 2: yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1

Round 3: k12

Round 4: yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1

Round 5: k12

Round 6: yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1

Round 7: k12

Round 8: ** yo, sk2p, yo, cdd, yo, sk2p, yo, cdd

Round 9: k8

Round 10: yo, cdd, yo, k1, yo, cdd, yo, k1

Round 11: k8

Round 12: cdd, k1, cdd, k1

Round 13: k4

Round 14: k2tog, ssk

Round 15: k2

Round 16: k2tog

Finishing:

Break yarn and weave through remaining 9 stitches.

Weave in ends.
